AIRED:
Paul Gallico's short story about a USO entertainer and an Army Captain in World War II Belgium. Verna, a not-too-talented, but terribly enthusiastic singer and dancer joins a USO tour during World War II. They tour the European theatre and bring joy to the soldiers. Verna falls in love and refuses a marriage proposal from a handsome Captain. She dreams of the funeral she will have once she is a world-famous Broadway and Hollywood star. Sometimes dreams do come true.moreless

This is a gorgeous little gem of an entry in the Great Performances series. Adapted from the short story by Paul Gallico (The Poseidon Adventure) by playwrite Albert Innaurato. Tragi-comedy at it's zenith! Indelibly etched performances by the four main actors, Sissy Spacek and William Hurt very early on; and Howard Da Silva (Emmy winner for this piece) and Sally Kellerman (who's never been better!). Clearly on a budget, the production values are never-the-less top drawer and capture the time and place beautifully. I expected a light-hearted comedy and ended in tears. Both the director and writer received well deserved Emmy nominations.moreless
