Greatest Sports Legends was a television show profiling many of the greatest American athletes of the 20th century. Each episode focused on the life and career of one athlete, with an emphasis on their greatest personal and professional triumphs and tragedies. There were five hosts over the life of the series: George Plimpton, Reggie Jackson, Tom Seaver, Jayne Kennedy and Paul Hornung. Athletes profiled on Greatest Sports Legends included numerous football and basketball stars, tennis players Chris Evert and John McEnroe, baseball players Willie Mays and Sandy Koufax, sprinter Evelyn Ashford and hockey defenseman Denis Potvin. Episodes typically included interviews with the star athlete and his/her family, friends and team mates, childhood photographs, newspaper headlines and video clips of practice sessions and the subject's most impressive performances. 215 episodes were filmed. Greatest Sports Legends remains an extremely popular series with fans of American athletics and international sports figures who were active between 1950 and 1985.
