Freshman Daze

Episode Recap

It's been a long time since the last All Greek Ball. Two years, to be exact -- Casey's freshman year, if you're counting. Something bad happened back then, but no one's talking about it: The Zeta Beta girls are too psyched about their first formal in forever to dwell on the past.

Now Cappie, he's a different story. He's not going to the ball -- and neither is any other Kappa Tau. Whatever happened back then has Cappie doing a serious little denial dance. But the past has a way of sneaking up on you ... in a whole slew of flashbacks. Cappie's having them, and so are Casey and Evan.

And there are some serious surprises. For starters, Cappie wasn't into frats at all, until his freshman roommate, Evan, dragged him to rush. Evan -- sporting a sweet little goatee -- wants to try out a new personality. Seems like a good idea to Cappie. He's known silver-spoon Evan since summer camp, and if anyone could use a change -- it's Evan.

Casey flashes back to some surprises too. Like that one time, when Frannie wasn't such a rhymes-with-witch. Actually, there were a bunch of times. When Casey refuses to partake in the donut test (you gotta see it) during rush, Frannie sees a kindred independent spirit. And when Frannie takes Casey on as her little sister, she pledges not to abandon her -- for all time. And she means it too -- for this episode at least!

Cappie thinks rush is LAME until Evan takes him to the house Evan desperately wants to join: Kappa Tau. Kappa Tau? That's right, Evan wanted to be a KT. Cappie likes what he sees: a raging party. Cappie jumps in, downs a fifth faster than you can say OMG and sets the party on fire while Evan mopes in the corner. Nobody will talk to him -- even when he drops the "Chambers" bomb. And then: She walks in. Miss Casey Cartwright. Cappie makes a major play ... and Evan makes a polite move. Guess who wins round one in the battle for Casey's heart?

Cappie, of course. He's winning hearts and minds everywhere he turns. The Kappa Taus offer him a spot -- and toss in one for his lame roommate, Evan. When Evan finds out the Kappas only took him to get a lock on Cappie, he's crushed. Evan shaves the goatee, pledges Omega Chi, and soon it's Oxfords and argyle for young Mr. Chambers. (Do college freshmen really wear that stuff?)

But Casey is getting tired of the beer-swilling God of Kappa Tau. And who's there to listen to her wrestle with her Cappie conundrum? Why, Evan, of course. Don't jump to conclusions: Evan plays it straight as an arrow. He doesn't pursue her at all. He just picks her up every time Cappie tosses her overboard to party with his 50 best buds at Kappa Tau. The worst is the night of the ball: Cappie stands her up. She goes to his dorm room, but all she finds there is Evan. He tells her Cappie went to Kappa Tau for a pre-party, and she's pissed. Evan offers to take her -- as a friend -- and Casey accepts.

Frannie shows up at the Kappa Tau house, and she's pissed too -- revealing something of the demon we saw last season. No one stands up Frannie's little sister and gets away with it. A few cracks of the whip, and she has Cappie dressed and stumbling off to the ball. Great idea -- except that the first thing Cappie sees is Evan dancing with Casey. Cappie goes ballistic -- but not just about Casey. There's a lot of old hate and envy in Cappie, and it all comes boiling out of him. Evan doesn't back down, and the night descends into a brawl.

Of course, what's a flashback without a present-day tale? This one's all Casey -- give or take a few scenes. Frannie is trying -- hard -- to get back into Casey's life, and that's got Casey paranoid ... maybe a little too paranoid, if you ask Ashleigh. What if Frannie's just trying to make amends? But Casey won't let herself trust Frannie, not again. Until ... Cappie tells her what Frannie did the night of the ball. Frannie had Casey's back -- and Casey never even knew. Casey asks Frannie to go to the ball with her and Ashleigh. It looks like the reboot of a beautiful friendship.
