Episode Summary

Sam Drucker is selling artificial Christmas trees that squirt "genuine spruce spray" from the top and ooze fake sap from the trunk. Oliver is horrified; he wants an old fashioned Christmas with a real tree, but first he must get a permit from Mr. Kimball to chop one down. After decorating a real tree on Christmas Eve, the neighbors drop by the Douglases for an evening of songs and Lisa's hotscake "fruitscake".moreless

      ADD TRIVIA
      • Hank Kimball says they open all county agent meetings by singing "Bully for Clodwell" in honor of the patron saint of agents. He's the one who got Congress to add pockets to their uniform pants. Edit
      • Fred actually shows Doris some affection. Under the mistletoe, he dips Doris and plants a kiss on her lips! Edit
      • Oliver has turned one of Lisa's hotscake into a sink stopper by using her coffee as glue to attach a handle. Edit
    • Notes

      ADD NOTES
      • For some reason, all of Oliver's lines in this episode have been redubbed. (Perhaps he had a cold when the show was filmed?) In the brief flashback to New York that opens the show, the dialog from Oliver, Lisa, and Harry the tree salesman have all been re-recorded. Edit
    • Quotes

      ADD QUOTES
      • Doris: Mrs. Douglas came over here this afternoon and wanted to know how to make a fruitcake. And it'd been so long since I made one, I had'a look up the recipe. Fred: Is she gonna make a fruitcake for Mr. Dougas? Doris: She sure is. Fred: Doris, that could make you an accessory to manslaughter. Edit
      • Oliver: (with fife accompaniment of "Yankee Doodle") Gentlemen, I'm surprised at you. The American farmer didn't get where he is today by celebrating Christmas with--with phony trees, wax popcorn, plastic candy canes. Gentlemen, to the American farmer, Christmas is real. He goes out with axe in hand, chops down his own tree, brings it back, garlands it with strings of popcorn from his own corn crib, makes cider from his own apple trees. And when the Christmas carols ring out, in the still of the night, he looks up to the sky and says, "I'm proud to be an American farmer on Christmas"! Edit
      • Eb: (as Arnold nuzzles into the tree) What's he trying to do? Doris: He thinks all trees are squirters. Edit
