"The Case of the Hooterville Refund Fraud" is the one episode I'd hold out as the best of the best.
I believe it was included in a TV Guide top 100 episodes of all time list, and for good reason.
The writing never got crazier than this, as Oliver's attempts to explain why the government sent him a tax refund snowball into a mass effort of the Hooterville citizens to send in a request for the government to refund them all the money they lost farming over the past years.
Because the IRS didn't have a can of oil in their budget, their computer glitches and sends the refund. Oliver is incredulous, but all the citizens of Hooterville credit Mr. Douglas for giving them this great idea.
When the IRS turns up to get the money back and discover who's behind the scam, they are sent after Oliver.
Wait 'til you see what Mr. Haney gets the town to invest in with their windfall. Let's just say animal trainer Frank Inn doesn't disappoint with a brief bit of loopy footage.
This show was such a joy. Its garish country colors, delightful cast, and warm, outrageous surreal humor created something that has never been equalled.
