    • The chief treats a husband who needs something removed after he tried to perform an act from a magazine. The magazine shown is "Mode" magazine, a fictitious magazine that is the focus of the show "Ugly Betty".

  • Quotes

    • (Derek and Mark have decorated Meredith and Derek's bedroom with thousands of roses)
Derek: This is stupid. She's gonna hate this.
Mark: What? Flowers? Girls love this crap.
      Derek: It's cliche. I'm a cliche!
Mark: Cliches became cliches for a reason. Because they worked. It's great, isn't it? When you feel so strongly for someone and it's not just about the sex, it is... it's true.
Derek (laughs): You should not talk like that.

    • Arizona: Hey.
      Callie: Hey.
      Arizona: Ortho, right?
      Callie: Yeah, right. Hi.
Arizona: I'm Arizona Robbins, peds surgery. I've seen you at the hospital. ... Are you okay?
Callie: Yeah, no. I'm fine. ... Fine.
Arizona: People talk. Where we work. They talk. A lot. So, for the sake of being honest, I think I should tell you that... I know things about you, because people talk.
Callie: Oh, you mean... (Arizona nods) Terrific.
Arizona: It is, actually, the talk. People really like you over there. They respect you, and they're concerned, and they're interested. They really like you. Some of them really like you. You- You just look upset, and I thought that you should know that the talk is good, and when you're not upset, when you're over being upset, there will be people lining up for you.
Callie (laughs): You wanna give me some names? (Arizona kisses Callie)
      Arizona: I think you'll know.

    • Meredith: Derek is ... (sees Owen sleeping on Cristina, and whispers) What are you doing?
Cristina: I don't know, I just... Staying here.
      Meredith: Okay ... goodnight.
      Cristina: He's planning to propose.
      Meredith: Wh... What?
Cristina (motions with the journal): The Chief. Your Mother writes... he ah, told her he would leave Adele. Come back, get on one knee and propose, but, I don't think he ever did.
      Meredith: That's sad.
      Cristina: Is it?
      Meredith: Or romantic.

    • Lexie (sits on the bar stool next to Callie): Hey, do you mind if I sit here?
Callie: No. No. (takes a shot) I'm just overthinking.
Lexie: You think that he'll tell 'em?
Callie: If he's not an idiot.

    • Arizona: Dixon's right, you know. You do belong in peds surgery.
Bailey: My own baby almost died last year. Doctors in this hospital, my friends, they all worked to save his life, and I stood outside the room feelin' so... useless, so pointless and helpless like... I was losing everything in the world. And when he didn't die, see, I knew that I didn't wanna be anywhere near that feeling again. So, I think that makes me pretty unsuitable for pediatric surgery.
Arizona: I'd say that, that makes you uniquely qualified.

    • Bailey: I'm sorry for my outburst. I-I should've spoken to you first.
Virginia: That was inappropiate, but I've come to expect that from pediatric surgeons, always breaking protocol.
Bailey: What? I'm not a pediatric surgeon. I mean, I've landed a few peds surg cases recently, but I'm gettin' back to general surgery, the first chance I get.
Virginia: You touch the child whenever you speak to her, you explain conditions to the child, not just to the parents, and you react to the patients as if it was your own child. And you break protocol, which is inappropiate, except in the case of pediatric surgery where protocols are constantly evolving. You are not a general surgeon. ... You're a pediatric surgeon.

    • Lexie: I don't want to keep secrets.
      Mark: Sorry?
Lexie: I've been keeping secrets all day. About surgeries and rings, and about you. And- And that secret, the-they you secret, it's giving me high blood pressure, and I don't want that secret. ... We're having a relationship. And... if we are in a relationship then, I need to be in it in front of my sister, and Derek Shepherd. If we can't do that, then I can't do this. (walks out of the on-call room)

    • Bailey: Oh, Dr. Dixon. What can I do? How can I help?
Virginia (panicky): You can observe protcol, and I was getting to that, but it was too much-- It was just too much. Too much yelling, too much touching, too much...
Bailey: Okay... then I'll leave you alone to...
Virginia: No, no. I don't need alone. I need pressure.
      Bailey: I...?
Virginia: I need my nervous system supressed, I need constant, deep, tight pressure across large areas of my body. ... I need you to hold me. I need you to-- (Bailey walks over to her, and hugs her awkwardly) Tight- Tightly. Tighter... You're a very tiny person. I need a bigger person, I need more...
Cristina (comes in): Should I... (sees them hugging) Oh. Wh-What can I do?
Bailey: Get over here and hug on Dr. Dixon.
Cristina: I was thinking more like a shot of thorozine...
Bailey: Get over here. (Cristina comes over and hugs the other side of Virginia awkwardly. Scene change, then back to them)
Virginia: Cows are squeezed tightly in a chute before they're slaughtered. The chute applies intense pressure, resulting in decreased pulse rate, and muscle tone.
      Bailey: It calms them down.
Virginia: It calms them down. The same principles apply to people like me. A hugging machine is used to relax the sympathetic nervous system, it slows the heart. This is good, it's working.
Cristina: Oh, good. So we can stop now?
      Virginia: No.

    • Cristina: Hey, have you seen Bailey?
Meredith: No, but I have to talk to you. Derek is going crazy! This morning I said something about having cute babies, and now ever since he's been acting weird, and avoiding me, and dropping conversations when I walk up. I mean, he wants babies. He's always wanted babies.
      Jen: Oh, he wants babies.
Meredith: Maybe he just doesn't want my babies?
Lexie: No... that, that's not it.
Meredith: Yeah, because my babies will have Alzheimer's, and suicidal tendencies, and split ends.
Cristina: You might have something there.
Jen: No, I really don't think you do though.
      Cristina: Who are you?
      Jen: I'm Jen.

    • Jen: They didn't cover this is the what to expect books. They didn't say expect seizures.
Derek: I know that's why we're gonna do an exam, okay. I need you to look down for me.
Jen: Okay. (looks down and sees the ring in his pocket) Oh! What is that?
Derek: What? Oh... ah, Dr. Grey could you ah, set up an MRI for Mrs. Harmon please, right now.
      Meredith: But did you see...
      Derek: Now, Dr. Grey.
      Meredith: Okay... (walks off)
Jen: Oh... you, you saw something?
Derek: No, no no. No, I'm sorry. Alright, can you keep a secret?
      Lexie: You bet I can.
Derek: This is intended for Dr. Grey. It's supposed to be a surprise.
Jen: Oh my god... and I almost blew it!
      Derek: Yeah.
Jen: When are you gonna do it? Today? Oh please do it today! Do it here.
Derek: No, I don't know. I was told it was supposed to be like a grand gesture.
Jen: Oh. Well, Rob proposed to me in a supermarket aisle. He said that was the place he saw me for the first time. So, I said yes between the cat food and the tampons.
      Derek: Oh, that's romantic.
      Jen: It was actually.
Derek: We still have to do the MRI, okay? Just to be safe.
      Jen: Okay. ... Dr. Shepherd?
      Derek: Yes?
      Jen: Should I be scared?
      Derek: No. Should I?
      Jen: No.

    • Richard: So ah, ah, how are you gonna do it? Um, go big? A grand, romantic gesture?
Derek: Um, I... I don't know yet, Chief. I'm not sure that Meredith is the grand gesture kind of girl.
Richard: Oh, you wanna do the grand gesture. It's the opening page of your marriage. It can determine the entire game. You've gotta go all out. Now your plan should include: Flowers, candles, exotic foods, live musicians, and a row boat. Sky writing is not out of the question. You've gotta go...
      Meredith: Dr. Shepherd.
      Derek: Yes?
Richard: Ah, you've gotta... um... hmm... yeah.
      Meredith: Hi, um...
      Derek: What's up?
Meredith: I need a neuro consult.

    • Bailey: I think you better stay. I'm not scrubbing in on this one.
Arizona: Bailey, you can handle this surgery.
Bailey: Yeah, I can handle the surgery. What I can't handle is feeling another child is slipping away right in front of me.
Arizona: Mostly, they don't slip away. Even the really sick ones. Jackson was a special case. And- And even he survived.
Bailey: By the skin of his teeth...
Arizona: But he survived. Children are resilant, and in all likelyhood, you're gonna open up this girl's chest and fix something simple. And then you're gonna hand her back the rest of her life. I'm telling you, Bailey, you wanna be there for that.

    • Callie: So, you got a clean bill of health from Hunt. You gonna get back on the horse then?
Mark: Well, I wouldn't use the word 'horse', and no, that's not gonna work out. Things have changed, I think that I'm gonna have to break up with her.

    • Izzie: What's the problem?
Lorraine: She can't find a vein and she's poking me like I'm her needle point.
Izzie (to Sadie): Oh God, what is wrong with you people? Didn't you practice this on each other?

    • Derek: Ah, Cristina. Did you tell her about the ring?
Cristina: Uh, I don't wanna talk about your stupid ring.
      Derek: Good. Don't.
Cristina: Oh, you're not gonna do a bit thing are you? Like some big, romantic, McDreamy thing. 'Cause she'd hate that.
Derek: Well she built the house of candles...
Cristina: Yeah, for you. She built you a house of candles 'cause you like that sort of thing, she doesn't.
      Derek: Okay, thanks.

    • Bailey: It's been three days. Three days of vacation. The only three days I've ever taken, other than my maternity leave. Now, I know I'm behind, but...
Richard: Bailey, I get it. Jackson Prescott wasn't any easy case. I don't--
Bailey: Sir, I would rather not work on another dying kid again, but no need to worry, okay? I will catch up and--
Richard: I'm not worrying. ... I'm promoting you. I need another attending in general surgery. I'm submitting to the board that it'd be you... And that it starts this July. The minute you've completed your residency. Now, I know there was some talk awhile back about you getting tired of appys and galbladders.
Bailey: A full rosters of appys and galbladders sounds just perfect.
Richard: Alright, alright. But not today though, Dixon's requested you on her service. This is subject to board approval, Bailey, but I'm not worried. ... You have less to say now, huh? (Bailey smiles)

    • Derek: Pregnancy induced hypertension?
Meredith: Yeah, I have to get her BP down before it starts to affect the baby.
Derek: Nice couple, they'll have cute kids.
Meredith: Yeah, not as cute as ours but, cute. ... What?
      Derek (smiles): Nothing.

    • Meredith: So, what's goin' on with you and Mark Sloan?
Lexie: What? Nothing. No. Why-Why what did you think is... was?
Meredith: Well, you've been on his service now for over a week.
Lexie: Yeah, y'know, I'm really interested in plastics. As a speciality, I'm fascinated. I-I like... faces.
      Meredith: Mmhmm.

    • Owen: Dr. Sloan.
Mark: Dr. Hunt. (Owen holds open the door to the supply closet) Oh, let's make this quick. (shuts the door, they stay in there about a second and come out) So we good to go?
Owen: Yep. And use it wisely.

    • Mark (seeing the ring): Whoa... What is that?
Derek: What you think it is.
Mark: It's dangerous. People who carry guns are more likely to fire them.
Derek: Oh I'm ready to fire it. That's not the problem, she's the problem. She spooks easy. I have to fire at the right time, the right way. Otherwise, she'll panic and bolt. She's not ready. You think she's ready?
Mark: I dunno. More importantly, if you don't know you shouldn't do anything until you do know.

    • Meredith: Hey, I thought that you were sleeping?
Cristina: No, Hunt was in the on-call room.
Meredith: You had dirty sex Owen Hunt?
Cristina: No, it's not dirty, and it's not sex. It's... I don't know what it is.

    • Meredith: I need a favor. My mother's journal, her ninth journal. I need you to pre-read it for me.
      Cristina: Why?
Meredith: My mother had an affair with the Chief.
Cristina: Your mother had an affair with her chief resident? Rock on, Ellis!
Meredith: No, no, no, no, no. Not her chief. Our Chief. (she hands Cristina the diary)
Cristina: Oh, yeah. You'll go blind reading that.

    • Meredith (closing voiceover): It seems we have no control whatsoever over our own hearts. Conditions can change without warning. Romance can make the heart pound, just like panic can. And panic can make it stop cold in your chest. It's no wonder doctors spend so much time trying to keep the heart stable. To keep it slow, steady, regular. To stop the heart from pounding out of your chest. From the dread of something terrible or the anticipation of something else entirely.

    • Meredith: Hey, um did you eat? Let me change, I'll come with you.
Derek: No, no, no, I can't. I have to um... work.
Meredith: Okay, listen, you have been acting like a basket case ever since I dropped that stupid little comment about babies. And I'm glad I dropped it. Because if you don't want babies or you don't want babies with me and my crappy DNA, just say so. Don't have to avoid me and you don't have to make up lame excuses about work.
Derek: Meredith. I want your crappy babies.
      Meredith (laughs): You do?
      Derek: All of 'em.
Meredith: Okay, do you wanna eat?
      Derek: No...I... I gotta-- ... I have to work.

    • (everyone is discussing the article in the Kramers' magazine)
Izzie: They tried number 9? Who does 9?
      Sadie: Well personally I'm a fan of 5, 7, 8 ... Well, pretty much 12 through 20.
Meredith (laughs): I would try 15.
Izzie: Don't. Don't try 15. (George gets quiet instantly) I would try 16. Yeah. I've never done that before.
      Alex: You'd try 16?
Izzie: Mmhmm. I would. I totally would. (Izzie and Alex look at each other then quickly leave the table)
Lexie: Um, don't do 16 too fast. It can hurt badly ... (Meredith gives her a look) I've heard.
Cristina: Do you know who likes a good 12? (Cristina taps Meredith's mother's journal)
      Meredith: Ugh!

    • (Izzie is teaching the interns on how to do a cat scan by doing one on herself)
Izzie (to the interns): You want to take narrow slices with the scan so you get a more comprehensive look. What do you see?
George: I see a crazy person taking expensive tests for no reason and, oh, I see the Chief finding out and expelling the crazy person. And then I see joblessness, homelessness and depression. It does not look good, Izzie.

    • Callie: You're an idiot.
      Mark: Excuse me?
Callie: You're an idiot. What is your problem?
Mark (talking about Derek and Meredith): He is proposing to her. That makes Little Her, his little sister. And I can't sleep with any more sisters. And she's young. And I'm her boss.
      Callie: And I'm celibate.
Mark: What does that have to do with anything?
Callie: Celibancy is lonely. Don't spend all your time wondering what you are, or-or who you like, or whether it's right for you or wrong for you. Just let yourself be happy, okay? Before you find yourself alone. I'm celibate.

    • Alex (to the interns): Dudes. The patient can see you giggling over here like schoolgirls. Enough wise cracks.
      Steve: Cracks! (they all laugh)
Richard (walks up): What's so funny?
Alex: Sir, these idiots were screwing around and I kinda got sucked into it. (they all laugh)
Richard: Enough! Now, if you children need a lesson in professionalism, come and see how it's done.

    • Derek: She said a thing about babies. Like babies were a totally ordinary idea. She's not afraid, she's ready.
Mark: When are you gonna do it?
      Richard: Do what?
      Mark: Shepherd's proposing.
      Richard: No kidding, outstanding!
      Derek: Yeah.
Richard: How are you gonna do it?
      Derek: I don't know. I just decided.
Owen (walks up): Morning. (to Richard) Sir.
      Mark: Shepherd's proposing.
Owen: Congratulations. That's a big step.
Derek: Thank you very much. Are you just gonna tell everybody now?
Mark: You need advice. Hunt, have you ever proposed before?
Owen: Uh... sorry, I'm not the guy to ask. When are you gonna do it?
Derek: More importantly, how am I gonna do it?
Mark (sees Mer walk by, clears throat): So what did you use, like, a twist drill for that?
Derek: Oh no, you don't want a partial propriatal heamatoma! (they all laugh)
Meredith: Hi... (walks off, with a confused look)
      Owen: Good luck. (walks off)
Derek: Ahhh... Please don't tell anybody else, okay? I thought I could trust you.
Mark: Of course you can trust me.

    • Ryan: Hi, can I help you folks?
      Mr. Kramer: Not him.
      Alex: What's the trouble?
      Mr. Kramer: Not him either.
Mrs. Kramer: Oh, thank you, we'll wait.
Mr. Kramer: Oh, him. Hi, could you help us, please? We need to talk to a grown up.
Alex: This is the chief of surgery.
Richard: Well, hold on, Karev. That doesn't mean that I'm not a doctor. How can we help?
Mrs. Kramer: My husband and I--
Mr. Kramer: Our children went off to college, one is at Stanford, the other one's at UDUB...
Mrs. Kramer: We tried something. I knew... thing. And something slipped and we lost this...
Mr. Kramer: Rachel. We- We were reading this thing in a magazine.
      Mrs. Kramer: Here.
Richard (reading the article title): 'Twenty techniques to reignite your nights'?
Mrs. Kramer: We did number 9.
Richard: Um. Let's get you into a gown so ...
Mrs. Kramer: No. Him. He did number 9.
Mr. Kramer: We did number 9.
Mrs. Kramer: I'm not the one with it stuck inside ... It's him, he's the patient.
Richard: Have a seat and we'll take care of you.
      Mr. Kramer: Um... I'll stand.

    • Callie: Hey, how's it goin'?
Lexie: Oh my God, thank you for asking. It's going great. I mean, he's fun and he's funny. Even with no sex we just laugh and we talk.
Callie: Yeah. I don't want to hear this.
Lexie: Come on! But you have to. You're the only one who knows about us and I'm terrible at keeping secrets. Keeping secrets makes me sick.
Callie: Look, alone people don't like to hear about the together people, okay? Even if the alone people are alone by choice. It's just sort of mean. It's sort of like bringing a 6-pack to an AA meeting.

    • Owen (to Cristina): You should wear your hair up more. Shows off the back of your neck. I like the back of your neck.

    • Meredith (opening voiceover): Any first year med. student knows that increased heart rate is a sign of trouble. A racing heart could indicate anything from a panic disorder to something much, much more serious. A heart that flutters, or one that skips a beat, could be a sign of a secret affliction. Or, it could indicate romance which is the biggest trouble of all.
