Who was the Episode MVP ?

  • It's Not a long way Back...

Now this is the Grey's Anatomy I know. And the Grey's Anatomy I love. Scenes and music that touches your heart. Lines and moments that makes you smile and give a little laugh. Decisions that makes your heart stops. And revelations that makes you think. Like Callie and her baby, i think this episode helped us heal the wound of the pain we suffered in last week's wreckage. It sure didn't take that long to revive what we almost lost, confidence on the writers. This isn't their greatest episode, but every minute of it is worth watching. It isn't a long way back...

I wanna keep my review short and add some personal reactions...

For a moment there, i was thinking "Did Alex and Meredith just blew their chances to earn the chief residency spot?"... Well, it didn't take that long for my question to be answered. Maybe Meredith just did, but Karev had just won himself the top spot. Karev is just so cool. Truth is, i don't want that Australian blonde OB to be his partner, i want Lexie for him. They look good together. Karev is the greatest guy on this show, always has and always will be. We ought to figure that one out from the moment we learned his story. Like what Dr. Bailey once said. "he was in juvie and still managed to become a doctor." Impressive. I sure am placing my bets on Karev on winning the Chief Resident race, and either or both Meredith and Christina on being the first to gain Attending status...

I still think that Callie and Arizona are the best couple on this show. If what happened to them happened to anybody else, say Owen and Christina, or Derek and Meredith, they'd probably break up and wouldn't be together up to the next season or something. They are such a cute couple, and personality wise, they two are the best among this doctors, specially Arizona. Personal life don't normally affect their decisions and judgment calls as doctors. Unlike the others, personal conflicts results to conflicts inside the OR. Say, remember Owen, when he got mad at Meredith when Christina learned that he asked Derek to let Teddy go. He was all you-can't-be-in-my-O.R. look to Meredith. Not very professional I gotta say.

Another point, poor Sean(or whatever his name is) Elliot dumped him for J.D., and now Teddy is starting a flare with their former grief counselor.(woops, i'm talking SCRUBS here. That's Elliot's Sean from Scrubs right? it's how i remember him)

And lastly, this weeks biggest issue that's making all G.A. fans to scratch their heads... April Kepner and Dr.Stark? I personally think it's very interesting. It's something new from this show. Not another typical hottie-doctors-affair kinda stuff. And admit it, we kinda saw that one coming from the moment Stark gave Kepner that look. I like Dr.Stark, something new from the actor as well, i always picture him as either this annoying-crazy-type of character or this comedic-dysfunctional guy. (I'll never ever forget him playing Renfield in Mel Brooks dracula parody movie-[Dracula: Dead and Loving It]-, god that was jutst ridiculously crazy and freaking hilarious.)

  • yey, they're back!

This episode is 12 weeks in the making. We saw baby Sophia from one week to her twelve weeks. We see the recovery of Callie and the forging of friendship Arizona and Mark. I always like happy endings. I like Karev's humorous dealinsg with his senior patient. The retorts of both the patient and Karev were brilliant, I can't help but laugh when their scenes were shown. The arrival of the African kids to Seattle Grace was also touching. Karev's character has nicely evolved to this passionate doctor. I hope writers of Grey has a good love story for Teddy though.moreless
  • It's a Long Way Back.

Grey's returns for a final four episodes of season 7. It was enjoyable, and setup various story-lines for the season finale. Highlight? Probably Meredith taking a risky move in making sure Adele gets the medicine for the clinical trial. This could prove to be career changing and dramatic, so I look forward to see where this goes. The scene where Adele thought she was Ellis was intense.

Callie is on the road to recovery and struggling to cope. I liked how everyone pulled through for her, and that everything ended up okay. As predictable as that was. What happens to this new family now? A wedding. Interested to see how they handle this particular event.

Alex making that plan and boosting his chances of getting Chief Resident was a good storyline, especially with the inclusion of Lexie who's as endearing as ever.

Weakest storyline? Teddy and her dates. It was okay, but added little to the story and I don't care much for her with the doctors, so alone she's even more useless. Nothing overly special with Cristina and Owen either. I am really starting to like April, and actually enjoyed her interactions with Stark - however odd that relationship could be.

So a good episode, nothing amazing but prepares for next three episodes well.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (2)

  • QUOTES (28)

    • Meredith (opening voiceover): After a trauma, your body is at its most vulnerable. Response time is critical. So you're suddenly surrounded by people, doctors, nurses, specialists, technicians; surgery is a team sport. Everyone pushing for the finish line. Putting you back together again. But surgery is a trauma in and of itself, and once it's over, the real healing begins. It's called recovery. Recovery is not a team sport. It's a solitary distance run. It's long. It's exhausting. And it's lonely as hell.

    • Meredith (closing voiceover): The length of your recovery is determined by the extent of your injuries. And it's not always successful. No matter how hard we work at it. Some wounds might never fully heal. You might have to adjust to a whole new way of living. Things may have changed too radically to ever go back to what they were. You might not even recognize yourself. It's like you haven't recovered anything at all. You're a whole new person with a whole new life.

    • Callie: She's not ready, no she can't leave. She's been watched by doctors twenty four hours a day...
      Mark: She still will be.
Callie: Okay, well, her lungs. She could get RSV.
Arizona: Well, any kid could get...
Callie: She's not getting in a car. It's not safe.
      Mark: Callie...
Callie: It's not safe. The last time she was in a car, she nearly died, we both nearly died. Get-- get her out of that thing. Give her to me, Mark. I'm- I'm not kidding, (crying) get- get her out of that thing.
Bailey: Callie... Callie... Okay, you're right. You are absolutely right. Cars are not safe for children. Okay, neither are bookcases or squirrels, strong winds, people who sneeze. They're all going to get your baby. But honey, you don't feel this was because you were in an accident. You feel this way because you are a parent. It'll pass... mostly. Some of it never will.

    • Cristina: I can't believe she's leaving.
Owen: Yeah, she's cute, isn't she?
Cristina: No, Callie. She was my last cardio patient. Does Teddy even talk about me?
Owen: It's a cute baby, right?
Cristina: It's small features and over-sized eyes trigger a hormonal response in humans, it's autonomic. It's what keeps us from eating them.

    • April: People are talking about you. Kindly. They're saying you're kind, funny, compassionate, I mean, Dr. Robbins has a lot of nice things to say about you. I'm just glad, y'know. I'm glad that people are getting the Robert that I got to know... and like. You deserve for people to like you.
      Stark: It's Dr. Stark.

    • Callie: I really don't wanna go home until she goes, y'know? And clearly, she's not ready to go, so...
      Arizona: Shhh.
      Stark: She can go.
      Callie & Arizona: What?
Stark: Well, with most parents I'd say no, but she has three doctors at home, so if she passes the infant carrier test...
      Mark: Uh, what test?
Arizona: Oh, she has to sit in an infant carrier for an hour with no apnea or bradicardia.
Mark: Oh, she'll nail that. I'll go get it. (Arizona smiles and kisses Stark's cheek)

    • (Alex is handing out folders)
      Jackson: What's this?
Alex: What's this? It's your kid, your African kid.
      Cristina: Oh, that's happening?
      Jackson: Today?
Alex: Tonight. The first group gets here tonight. I've been telling you this all week. Look, each of you gets your own kid. Some of them will be traveling with family, a few of them are orphans, so you are in charge of your kid, alright? You're like their ambassador. (hands a folder to Cristina, but takes it back) Wait, you can't have her. You'd be awful to her. (Lexie laughs) Okay, him. (hands her another folder) No. Yes, him.
      Lexie: He's melting down.
      Jackson: Trainwreck.
Cristina: Evil spawn is now Mother Teresa.

    • Lexie: Oh, my, God. How did you let this happen?
Alex: It just happened. I asked for things, and-- and people started saying yes. I- I payed for it by myself at first and then I maxed out my cards but the ball was rolling, and- and planes were reserved, and a freaking military transport. I mean, what am I supposed to say? 'Sorry, nevermind, lack of funds. Keep your dying kids where they are.'
      Lexie: Well, yeah.
Alex: No, you say I'll payfor it when you get here. Keep the reciepts, give me the bill. And now... Oh, God, right now, they're eating eight dollar airport hamburgers that I can't pay for.
Lexie: Alex, this is... I mean, this is fraud, you actually grifted people.

    • Richard: Uh... Meredith. Thank you for everything that you've done.
Meredith: I didn't really do anything, the circumstances changed.
Richard: You did. You caught it first. And the minute you did, you looked after her, you did everything you could to take care of her. ... I've made a lot of mistakes, and it's taken me a lot of years to finally realize that all I wanna do is be with her. You've given us the best chance that we can get, you've done everything.

    • Bailey: Hey, I was just comin' to see you. (Callie looks at her) Not you, her. (motions toward Sofia) Good morning, beautiful.
Callie: Are you gonna tell me to get back in bed because I just got here.
Bailey: I am not. I was just... coming to tell you to go home. (Callie looks up at her, surprised) Don't drop that baby.
      Callie: T-To what?
      Bailey: Go home.
      Callie: When?
Bailey: Now. Look, your vitals are good, your balance is stable and you're obviously strong enough to carry this one around so, go. Get out.

    • Meredith: So how are you feeling?
Adele: You really wanna ask me that?
      Meredith: It's hard, I know.
      Adele: You think so?
Meredith: I only know from my side of it, from my experience.
Adele: Excuse me, but I have no use for your side of it. I thought I could handle it, I thought I could live with it, that it was only temporary, that it was gonna go away. But clearly, I was wrong. It's just getting worse.
      Meredith: I'm sorry.
Adele: Are you? Are you, really? Then stop. Please, just stop. Are you in love with him? If you're in love with him then I don't know what you should do, but I think, God help me, Ellis, I think he's in love with you. But if you're not, please, give him back.
Meredith: Adele, it's Meredith, not Ellis. It's Meredith. I'm her daughter. Ellis is gone. She died.
Adele (crying): Please give me back my husband. Please.
Meredith: H-He's yours. He's all yours.

    • Alex: Meet us at Joe's, I'm buyin'.
      Meredith: What's up?
Alex: A hundred thousand dollars is what's up, courtsey of the dragon lady in room 1022.
      Meredith: Alex.
Alex: You know what happens when you break the rules, Mer? You get a hundred thousand bucks. Drinks are on me.

    • Henry (on the phone): Wait, he made you pay for parking, too? (opens the door, and Teddy is there) Smooth. (hangs up)
Teddy: Yeah, and that was all before dinner. You gotta try this pasta, it's ridiculous.
      Henry: I'm in.
Teddy: Did I tell you that his hair was longer than mine?
      Henry: No. (laughs) No.
Teddy: Y'know, it's funny, I don't know why his online photo didn't feature his very, very long pony-tail.
Henry (laughs): I like this guy.

    • Lexie: Oh, she's been asking for you.
Mrs. Poulter: Get in here. This ham-fisted, twit doesn't know to roll me.
Alex: You asked me not to come back.
Mrs. Poulter: Just shut your hole and get in here before this idiot breaks my spine.
      Alex: One hundred grand.
      Mrs. Poulter: What?!
      Lexie: Alex, don't.
Alex: Gimme a hundred grand and I'll come in.
Lexie: Mrs. Poulter, he's-- he's joking. H-He doesn't mean that.
      Mrs. Poulter: Fifty.
      Alex: One hundred.
      Mrs. Poulter: Seventy-five.
Alex: One hundred grand, final offer.
Mrs. Poulter: You don't know how to negotiate.
      Alex: I'm not negotiating.
Mrs. Poulter: Oh, don't pretend to be smart, you crooked, little bastard.
Alex: And don't pretend you're poor, you evil, old bitch. One hundred grand!
Mrs. Poulter: Done. One hundred grand. Now get in here and roll me over.

    • (Callie is pushing Cristina around on a hospital bed)
Cristina: You ready to go back?
Callie: Uh uh. One more lap.
Meredith (walks up): Did you lose a bet?
Callie: Uh uh. She's my new physical therapist because she does what I tell her to.
      Meredith: Who's charts are those?
Cristina: Altman's because she's being ridiculous. I haven't seen a cardio surgery in a month.
Meredith: So, you stole her charts?
Cristina: Yes, I stole her charts so I will be prepared for when she comes crawling back.
Callie: Meredith, sit. I need the residence. (Mer gets on the bed)
Meredith: Oh, so I retested Adele Webber, she's worse than what I thought but at least she's gonna get on the trial.
Cristina (looking at a chart): See? See? I should be on this. How do I even have a shot at Chief resident if I can't do what I'm good at.
Lexie: Alex, you didn't. You're gonna be fired.
Alex: I'm gonna be chief resident.
Lexie: Not if you don't work here anymore. He solicited a patient for money.
      Cristina: What are hooking now?
Alex: No, my African kid thing.
Lexie: It's against so many rules.
Alex: Who cares? The old hag could die and leave her money to help children, but instead she'll probably leave it to her cat, who probably ate her, too. Are you going to radiology?
Arizona (walks up): Hey, everybody, off. Now. (they all scurry off the bed)

    • Stark (after Alex talks to him about bringing kids over from Africa): How are you going to pay for all of this?
Alex: Well, that's why I'm talking to you. You're the chief of peds surgery. I mean, they're incredible surgeries, on kids.
Stark: Oh, oh, okay. So, it's coming out of my budget?
Alex: Well, I'm saying if I do all the logistical crap it's a project the hospital should fund, right? I mean, it's-- it's worth...
Stark: Nothing. That's what it's worth. Oh, no. I'm sorry.
Alex: Right. I should've known what you'd say.
Stark: No, no. You don't get to do that. You don't get to ask me to fund a plan this half-assed, then paint as someone who wants to deny healthcare to third-world kids. I mean, come on. There are other people who could do this sorta thing but you're not one of 'em.

    • Arizona: Breathe, breathe.
Physical Therapist: No, no. She can't talk to me like that. I'm a trained professional and she's an uncooprative, insulting--
Arizona: Finacee of mine. So, let's just... let's watch it.
Callie: He's a wuss. Let him go.
Physical Therapist: Good luck. (walks out)
Arizona: That's the third one this month.
Callie: They don't push me hard enough.
Arizona: It's a tramautic brain injury, it's not boot camp.
Callie: We're getting married. You want me walking down the aisle, not rolling, right?
Arizona: I want you healed. It's okay, I mean, the wedding can wait... (Callie drops her exercise ball and then kicks it)
Callie: Ugh! Sorry. ... The baby won't wait. You can pick her up, you can hold the baby. Mark can hold the baby. I can't hold my baby. Don't tell me it's okay.
      Arizona: I'm sorry.
Callie: Then bring me those balls please. (Arizona nods)

    • (They are all moving Callie to see her baby, Jackson is trying to distract Bailey)
Jackson: Dr. Bailey, can I ask you something?
      Bailey: What is it?
      Jackson: How's your day going?
Bailey: How's my day going? (behind her everyone is sneaking Callie across the hall) Uh, my day should've ended three hours ago, I'm tired, it's late, and I still have six more things to do before it's over and now I have you in face asking me how my day is going.

    • Owen: Karev, what's your plan for Chief resident?
      Alex: My plan?
Owen: Mm. Besides, bad mouthing patients. All your colleagues are showing some leadship potential. Grey and Avery they're on clinical trials, Kepner's overhauling the surgical checklist, they have a plan. I was just wondering if you...
      Alex: African kids.
      Owen: Sorry?
Alex: Yeah, I'm gonna bring over about a dozen kids from Africa and uh... get them surgeries, badly needed surgeries.
      Owen: Hm. Sounds pretty ambitious.
      Alex: I'm an ambitious guy.
Owen: Also sounds like you just pulled that out of your butt.
Alex: Oh, no, sir. It's a plan... That I've uh... been planning.
Owen: Okay, well, good. Let me know if I can help. (walks off)
Lexie (overhearing): Right out of your butt.
      Alex: Shut up.

    • Mrs. Poulter: So am I leaving? What's my number?
      Alex: It's not good.
Mrs. Poulter: Not your opinion, stupid. Number.

    • Henry: Oh, damnit. Look at you.
      Teddy: What?
Henry: You look amazing. You were on a date, weren't you? I made you come here in the middle of a date.
Teddy: No, no, no. Actually, you saved me, from the longest date with the most tedious man. And the only good thing that came out of the date were these cannolis, which as it turns out, is exactly what someone needs when they're having a hypoglasmic episode.
Henry: Yeah, you still shouldn't have come.
Teddy: Yeah, you know, you'll stop saying that once you try this.
Henry (bites into a cannoli): Mmm, yeah. Okay, tell me about this date.
Teddy: Oh, well, his name is Irwin.
Henry: Ooh. Okay, so strike one. (Teddy laughs)

    • Stark: I thought Dr. Bailey said Torres can't be moved yet.
Cristina: Yes, sir, but she has had no contact with the baby, I was wondering how soon we could--
      Stark: You mean, Torres.
Cristina: I think it would do the both of them good. If I could at least tell Dr. Torres when she could--
Stark: When the baby is off the baby is off the vent, when she has an immune system and can withstand the onslaught of deadly infections Dr. Torres would threaten her with, that's when. I mean, come on. I'm all for mother-baby bonding but not when it would kill the baby. Why do you even ask me these things, huh? I thought you were a doctor.

    • Alex (looking at scans): Wow, that kid looks screwed.
Arizona: He is. He has five different cardiac and abdominal defects. I was supposed to operate on him next week.
Alex: Awesome. Can I scrub in?
Arizona: Yeah, if you can get us to Africa. I was supposed to go back there next week but... now I have a very sick little girl of my own and my finacee's in the ICU...
      Alex: Fly him out here.
Arizona: I've tried. But you can't imagine the red tape, and the money... And there's a dozen more like him that I wanna do the same thing for. I'm trying to find someone to help him out over there. I just... I made a promise, that's all.

    • April: She opened her eyes. Sofia, she looked right at me, I saw her sweet little eyes, they-- they're beautiful. They look just like yours. Oh, my God, I should've taken pictures. (Callie starts to cry) Why didn't I do that? Oh, no, oh God, no, I'm so sorry.
Cristina: April, go get the pictures! Callie... Callie... (Callie tries to sit up) No, Callie, don't. Stop it. You're ripping your sutures.
Callie (sobbing): I am missing her.
Cristina: I know. I know, honey, I know.
Callie: She could die, and I'll never-- I could miss her whole life!

    • Cristina: Hey, it's healing pretty well. Maybe in a couple days you can try sitting up by yourself.
      Callie: Let's try now.
      Cristina: Can't rush it.
Callie: Why'd I get you? Why aren't you cutting out hearts somewhere?
Cristina: Well, Altman and I had a falling out over your ventricular septal defect, actually. I'm giving her some space. Okay, you're good. You need anything?
Callie: I need to see my baby.
Cristina: She's mostly tubes and wires. And she looks more like a chicken than a baby. Like a featherless, beakless chicken. You want to wait until she's cuter.
Callie: You're the worst godmother ever.
      Cristina: You picked me.

    • April (to Stark): Oh, I smoothed out some bumps in the NICU surgery protocol if you wanna... (turns to hand him the paper, and Stark is already walking away) ... Stop acting like a child.
Meredith: You crushed his heart, April. And none of us thought he had one, that's impressive.

    • Alex: Mrs. Poulter, you need to stop smoking because your infections are getting worse.
Mrs. Poulter: Your infections, you mean. I didn't have them until you two idiots operated, and you didn't even do that right.
Owen: Again, I am sorry, but your lung cancer had spread to the point--
Mrs. Poulter: It's useless. I can afford any hospital in the world and I come to this third-rate crap factory. When am I getting out of here? I've been here for three weeks. This is not Guantanamo.
Alex (to Owen): Discharge her, please. I'll pay you.
Owen: There's not much more that we can do unless you're willing to help yourself. Now, the smoking--
Mrs. Poulter: Oh, if I wanted a lecture on smoking, I'd dig up my dead husband. Now, get me outta here before I sue your balls off.
Owen: Well, we'll run some tests and if your white blood cell count is up to an acceptable level--
Mrs. Poulter: How high does it have to be? Give me a number.
Owen: Well, it's at a .8 now and I'd like it to be above a two.
      Mrs. Poulter: One.
Owen: This is not a negotation.
Mrs. Pouler: Everything is. 1.5. 1.5 and you let me outta here. Now, get me a wheelchair because if I have to wait around in this hell hole, I'm gonna smoke.

    • Callie: So, today, I can see her today?
      Bailey: I'm sorry...
      Callie (whines): No.
Bailey: But until you can be mobilized and your infections are completely gone, you cannot see her and she cannot leave the NICU. (Callie pouts and turns away from Bailey) Now, you know I would if I could. You know that, right? (Callie just ignores her, and keeps looking away) Yang, tell her I would. (leaves)
Cristina: She would. If she could. (Callie holds up her hand, but still can't extend her fingers) Are you giving me the finger?
      Callie: Yes, I am.
      Cristina: Good job.

This is a reference to the season 4 episode Piece of My Heart in which Bailey's baby, Tuck has a bookcase fall on him.

    • Title: It's a Long Way Back

"It's A Long Way Back" is a song from Ramones.
