Moment of Truth

Aired Thursday 8:00 PM Apr 26, 2012 on ABC

  • Trivia

  • Quotes

    • Jackson: Good luck. April? ... Come on, you're not even gonna look at me or--
April: No. No, it's not you Jackson. It's... Jesus. I was a virgin because I love Jesus. And now Jesus hates me.

    • Derek: Well, we did it. We made it through the night. You know why, Zola? 'Cause we're survivors, me and you. And your mom's gonna pass the boards, and hopefully you don't throw up on me in the next 15 minutes, right? (Lexie walks in) Where have you been all night?
Lexie: At the hospital. I was finishing your neuro research. Why is she in a bumblebee costume?
Derek: Oh, she's thrown up on all of her other clothes.
Lexie (sighs & sits down): Mark says that he misses me. But I miss him, you know? I, uh... I really... (voice breaking) I really miss him. You know, he thinks-- He thinks that I still love Jackson, but I try to tell him that I don't, I try to tell him that I still love him... But-- But I-I open my mouth... (crying) and nothing comes out. And everything is terrible.
Derek: It's gonna be okay. It's gonna be okay.

    • Jackson (knocking on door): Fine, Ma. You were right. I always feel-- (Richard opens the door) Oh. Sorry I thought this was my mom's room.
Richard: Uh, uh, no, no problem. I thought you were room service. No problem at all. (Richard shuts the door, Jackson looks confused then realizes and knocks again, Catherine answers)
Catherine (hands Jackson the pencil): Good luck, baby. (shuts door, to Richard) Do you think he's traumatized?
      Richard: For life. (they laugh)

    • Meredith: Are you up?
Cristina: Uh huh. How are you feeling?
      Meredith: Worse.
      Cristina: Get up.
Meredith: Seriously, Cristina, I don't think I can.
      Cristina: Open the door.
Meredith: Just go get ready, I'll be fine.
Cristina: Open the door, Mer. (Mer opens the door, and then throws up) Okay, now that's the last time that you throw up. Mind over matter. You can do this.

    • Arizona: How's Morgan doing?
Alex: She just lost her baby. How do you think she's doing?
      Arizona: Okay, look, Karev--
Alex: Oh, come on. It's been a long night. Whatever you want to nag me about just-- Can't it wait?
Arizona: No, it can't. I need you as my PEDS fellow next year. I need you to pass your boards, and you can't pass your boards unless you take them.
Alex: Look... (sighs) I need to stay here with Morgan--
Arizona: Morgan needs to get by without you right now. You were her baby's doctor, that's all. She's gonna be okay, I will make sure she is.
Alex: The test is gonna be like, in-- in three hours.
Arizona: I have never once seen you give up on a patient, Karev. Don't give up on this.
Alex: I'm never gonna get there in time.
      Arizona: Try.

    • Meredith: You can stay with me. Alex, Jackson and April moved out. There's room.
Cristina: I don't want to come stay with you.
      Meredith: Is he moving out?
      Cristina: I don't know.
Meredith: But you're not together, you broke up.
Cristina: No, we can't just... break up. We're married.
Meredith: I know. I mean, I think Derek used a pretty good attorney for his divorce.
Cristina: I don't want an attorney.
Meredith: Okay. ... Well... he cheated on you.
Cristina: Yeah, this isn't you and Derek. He didn't fall in love with her. He screwed someone... one time... when he was drunk. I mean, does that mean my marriage is over?
Meredith: What he did was wrong, and if it were me--
Cristina: Hey, if I screwed someone once when I was drunk-- And I could, I know me. If I did it... I wouldn't want Owen to leave me for that. Everything isn't so perfectly right or perfectly wrong.
      Meredith: Okay.
      Cristina: Say it.
Meredith: You got married awfully fast.
      Cristina: Be on my side.
Meredith: I am on your side. But it, you know, it's like you're defending him. And I don't know how we're supposed to feel.
Cristina: Well, he's my husband. Th-This is a marriage.
      Meredith: Okay.
Cristina: Oh, I wanna leave him.
      Meredith: Okay.
Cristina: So, that means I'm gone.
Meredith: So you're gonna take the job at Stanford?
      Cristina: Or Columbia.
Meredith: Well, you'd be leaving me, too.
Cristina: Well, you might go to the Brigham.
      Meredith: Probably not.
Cristina: Maybe. ... Yeah, I'd leave you, too. There are phones, you know?
Meredith: Oh, you hate the phone.
Cristina: I know I do. But... I mean, I don't have to like it.
Meredith: Put your hand under the door.
      Cristina: What?
Meredith: Just do it. (Cristina does so and starts crying Mer holds her hand)

    • Jackson: That was really great. That was really--
April (laughs): Yeah. Yes. Yes, yes that was...
Jackson: You were great. I mean-- I mean, are you, uh... Are you glad we did that?
      April: Yeah. Yeah.
      Jackson: So, you're okay?
April: Yeah, I'm fine. I'm just... tired. You should get some sleep.
Jackson: Yeah. I should get some sleep. Here or--
April: Yeah. Yeah. Or... Or you could go. Don't you have to get your pencil?
Jackson: It's the middle of the night. (they laugh)
      April: Right.
Jackson: But you know what? I could go if you want. Yeah. You know what? I'll go. You can get some sleep. You sure you're okay?
      April: Great.
      Jackson: I'll see you tomorrow.

    • Richard: And I look just left of their heads. It freaks 'em out!
      Catherine: You are terrible.
Richard: Oh, come on, now. You gonna try and tell me you're all warm and maternal?
Catherine: I am supportive and encouraging.
Richard: Mmhmm. I've watched you with your students. I know your moves.
      Catherine: Oh, do you now?
      Richard: I certainly do.
Catherine: I don't know. I may have a move or two that you haven't seen.
Richard: Would-- Would you like some coffee?
      Catherine: No.
      Richard: More-- More desert?
      Catherine: No.
      Richard: You tired?
      Catherine: Not in the least.
Richard: Would you like me to get the check? (Catherine asks the waiter for the check)

    • Mark: Oh, by the way, it wasn't me, was it?
      Lexie: What?
Mark: That split you two up-- The fact that Avery and I are working together, the fact that you have to see me all the time? I mean, I don't-- I don't make you uncomfortable, do I?
Lexie: No. No, no, no, no. I... No, you don't.
Mark: Great, because this is nice. Talking to you-- I miss it. I miss you.
Lexie: I miss you, too. And... The reason that Jackson and I broke up, it--
Mark: Oh, you know what? We don't have to talk about that. It's none of my business, so forget I asked. We can be friends who don't talk about that stuff, ever.
      Lexie: Okay.
Mark: Oh. But as your friend, if you're not over him, you should tell him. Because seriously, you guys are great together.
      Lexie: Thanks.

    • Callie: Hey. How we doing in here?
Teddy: I am not the problem. He is. I mean, he is completely unwilling to collaborate. He should've been in here fixing that leak. But oh, no. He is just not willing to even hear me. I mean, it's obstructing patient care... (Bailey walks over to Callie):
Callie: Really? You had eight hours.
Bailey: Why is this on me?
Callie: Well, because she'll listen to you. And because I organized ladies night. It's your turn.
Teddy (rambling to herself): ... jump in again. I can't work with him if he is gonna fight me on every single thing.
Bailey: Okay, he is not fighting you. He disagreed with you on a course of treatment. That is something doctors do. But you don't see him as a doctor. You only see him as the man you blame for the death of your husband. And you know, and I know that was not his fault. But he's accepted that blame because he thinks it makes you feel better. He's not fighting you but you keep fighting him. ... He lost you. He lost his friend, and now he's probably losing his wife. His whole world is falling apart. So, I hope blaming him is helping you, because it sure isn't helping him.

    • Catherine: I'm just saying, if Jackson doesn't pass tomorrow, I'm holding you personally responsible.
Richard: Well, don't worry about Jackson. He kept his head down. He's in good shape.
Catherine: And how about you? How's Adele?
Richard: Okay, I think. I haven't seen her in a while. It confuses her more than anything when I'm there.
Catherine: How are you with that?
Richard: It's... It's the right thing. Actually, she's happier.
Catherine: At our age, you'd think we wouldn't have to grow up anymore, huh?

    • April (laughing): Oh my, God. That was amazing.
Jackson: You just punched a guy.
      April: I punched a guy.
Jackson: You were freakin' crazy in there.
April: Jackson, we are gonna do this. I- I- I can feel it. This is our last night as residents.
      Jackson: Let's hope.
April: No, stop that! You just stop doubting yourself. We freakin' kicked that guy's ass in there. We are going to kick this test's ass.
Jackson: How come you're so confident all of a sudden?
      April: I'm a solider.
Jackson: Yeah, I still don't know what that means, but--- (April kisses him) Mm. April.
April: Should I not have done that? (kisses him again) If you want me to stop, just say so. And I'll stop.
Jackson: I just-- You're... The way you're kissing me right now, you just-- (whispering) You're a virgin. You're a virgin.
April: Yes, because my whole life, since I was a kid, I had this idea of how my life was supposed to be, these rules that I was supposed to follow, but I'm not a kid. I'm not the same person I was when I started my residency. I just punched a guy. And it felt really good. And if something feels really, really good. It can't be bad, right?
      Jackson: I, uh...
April: Jackson, hey. It's okay. Really. It's okay. (they start making out and go inside April's room)

    • (Cristina knocks on Mer's door)
      Meredith: Coming.
Cristina: No, no. Don't open the door. I just want to know if you need anything.
Meredith: Oh, no, no. I'm okay.
      Cristina: Did you sleep?
Meredith: No, it's worse when I lie down or-- whoa. Or when I stand up apparentelly. (sits down) Do you think Zola's gonna hate me?
      Cristina: Why?
Meredith: Because moms should be with their kids when they're sick. All you want to do is lay on top of your mom when you're sick. My mother was never around to lay on top of, and now I'm not there for Zola to lay on top of. I was just wondering if you think if she's gonna hate me.
      Cristina: Owen slept with someone.
      Meredith: Yeah.
      Cristina: Did you know?
      Meredith: Yeah.
      Cristina: Does everyone know?
Meredith: No. He thought you told me, so he told me. Anyway, that's how I know.
      Cristina: Okay.
Meredith: He is a pig, and you deserve better. ... Are you still there?
      Cristina: Yeah. I'm still here.

    • Richard: Catherine?
      Catherine: Richard? You're an examiner?
Richard: Either that or I'm stalking you. (laughs)
Catherine: Well, that's a win-win if I ever heard it. Give me a hug. (they hug)
      Richard: I didn't know you'd be here.
Catherine: Every year. Making the future of medicine wet it's pants. What are you doing here?
Richard: Archie Katz-- he came down with the stomach flu. And they asked me to sub in. You know, I figured I'd spend the entire day staring at sweaty, anxious residents. This is a real improvement.
      Catherine: I should hope so.

    • April: You want more of this? 'Cause I got more!
Kevin: Shut your big mouth, alright?
April: Oh, yeah, it goes with my big brain, dumbass! That's why I got your job next year!
Richard (walks up): Enough! Now if anyone is still here in 30 seconds you're barred from the test. Now get! (Kevin walks away)
Jackson: That was not our fault, okay? These Case Western Reserve guys, they starts the whole--
April: What are you doing here?!
Richard: What am I doing here? What are you doing here?
April: We just came down here to get something to eat--
Richard: No, I thought you were here to prove that the considerable amount of money spent training you wasn't wasted. That the dreams you had of becoming surgeons won't vanish in a puff of smoke tomorrow when the examiner asks you a question and you can't answer it because instead of getting a good night's sleep, you were engaging in a barroom brawl.
      Jackson: We should probably go.
April: We should go. Good night, Chief. (they walk away)
      Richard: Good lord.

    • Jackson: Who's that?
April: Ah, some guy who thinks I stole his job. He hates me.
Jackson: So what? He's a douche. And here he comes.
Kevin (walks up, drunk): Ah, I want to apologize. I was a tool this afternoon. No hard feelings?
April: Sure, yeah. No problem. No problem at all. I'm sorry.
Jackson: You have nothing to be sorry for.
Kevin: I mean, best man wins and all that stuff, right? Or woman, whatever.
Kevin's Friend: Yeah, he's had a few beers and he got bad today, so we'll just--
Kevin: All I'm sayin' is, obviously, she can offer something that I can't offer.
Jackson: Alright, everyone's just a little wound up, okay? So big day tomorrow, maybe you should, um, go sleep it off.
Kevin: Are you the boyfriend? You know, you should watch out next year because Ted Stevenson likes himself a redhead.
Jackson: Alright, Kevin. I think you can leave.
Kevin: Or maybe you found that out already. Is that how you got the job? (April turns around and punches Kevin) Ooh. Bitch! (Jackson steps in, Kevin punches him)
      Jackson: Really?
      Kevin: You want to go?
April: Yeah, bitch. I want to go!

    • April: We're falling apart. Meredith's sick and Alex... What the hell was he thinking?
Jackson: See, you gotta put all that out of your head, okay? Concentrate on your own game.
      April (exhales): I'm a solider.
      Jackson: What?
April: Nothing. Hey, but we're still standing, right?
Jackson: Hell yeah we are. Me and you.
      April: Me and you.

    • Mark: You mind if I join?
      Lexie: No, uh please.
Mark: I sent my idiot intern to get me lunch. I told him to get me anything but lentil soup. You know what he brought me?
      Lexie: Lentil soup.
      Mark: The future of medicine.
Lexie: Ah, I don't know. We're not all hopeless.
Mark: I know. I'm spoiled with Avery. He's quick, he's thorough, he's funny.
Lexie: Right, in a very dry kind of way.
Mark: Right? What the hell happened to you two? Why'd you break up? (gets a page) Great. It's Dumbo, the flying idiot. I left him treating a burn. Now he's probably the one on fire. To be continued.

    • Callie: Hey, checking in. Almost done?
Owen: Almost. But you should ask Altman. She usually disagrees with me.
Teddy: I need to check the final position of the graft so, yeah, I disagree with Hunt.
Callie: Okay then. I don't want to interrupt the work you're doing here, fixing the problems tat we all want fixed, that we all need fixed. So, uh, I'll be back.
Bailey: Uh, you could stay. There's room. Stay.

    • (Cristina comes in Mer's room wearing a mask and gloves carrying a Gatorade and an I.V bag)
      Meredith: Nice.
      Cristina: I don't take chances.
Meredith: My kid just hung up on me.
      Cristina: Yeah, that'll happen again.
Meredith: Where did you get an I.V and fluids?
Cristina: I'm a doctor in a hotel full of doctors. Roll up your sleeve.
      Meredith: You're a nice person.
Cristina: Ah, don't get all misty. I'm out of here in 60 seconds. This room is like a viral cesspool.
Meredith: Ow. I take that back.

    • (On the phone)
      Meredith: How's Zola?
Derek: Her fever's down to 100. Stop worrying.
Meredith: I can hear her screaming, Derek. (Zola is crying)
Derek: No, no, she's screaming, 'Go, Mama, kick butt on the boards.'

    • Alex (about Jackson studying): Dude, give it a rest. If we don't know it by now, we're screwed. Besides, you've got your magical pencil to see you through.
Cristina: He's got a magic pencil? Oh, say more.
      Alex: His mommy brought it.
Cristina: Wait. How magical is this pencil? And can it stop that? (points to April who's crying)
April (crying): I'm sorry. I'm sorry. This all just got really, really real.
      Cristina: And man down.
Jackson: Two men down. First Grey, now--
Cristina: Meredith's not down. She's fine.

    • Callie: Okay. Page me for the tib-fib fracture when you're done.
      Bailey: Hey, where you goin'?
Callie: Oh, you wanna be in the O.R with those two? They hate each other.
Bailey: Oh, they're professionals, they'll be fine.
Callie: No, it's awful, it's tense and it's cold and it's dangerous. It feels like diffusing a bomb, in a haunted house, that's built on a minefield, and there are bears, everywhere and the bears have knives.
Bailey: Uh, now I have to be in here with 'em for the next eight hours.
Callie: You have to tame them or you will die. We will all die. Their hate will destroy this hospital, and then the whole planet. I am counting on you, Bailey. We're all counting on you. God speed.

    • Cristina: There must be, what, like a hundred people in this room? If Kepner is right, 20 of them are screwed.
      Meredith: I'm gonna puke.
Cristina: Oh, relax. You're not one of them.
Meredith: No, on you. (Cristina quickly moves)

    • Alex: Mommy bring you your binky?
Jackson: It's my lucky pencil. She brought my lucky pencil.
Alex: You know this is an oral test, right?
Jackson: Yes, I know, okay? It's just, I used it for my SAT's, and my MCATs and my intern exam...
      Alex: So it's your binky.
Jackson: It's... sort of, like my binky, yeah.

    • Alex: Dude is that your mom?
      Catherine: Baby!
      Jackson: Oh, no.
Catherine: I know. I know you don't want to see your mother before the boards. But they are wearing this old girl out. They got me examining three sessions tomorrow and I might not get to see you, so I had to say good luck.
      Jackson: Thank you, Mom.

    • Jackson: Zola has the stomach flu and you didn't say anything?
April: How could you? Are-- Are you trying to sabotage us all?
Meredith: It's not like it's the black plague.
April: You are supposed to be our friend.
Meredith: Oh, April, calm down. (Mer moves toward them)
Alex: Y-You stay right where you are, Typhoid Mary. Come on, let's go register.
Cristina: Mer, just sit. And I'll get your registration package.

    • Meredith: Zola has the stomach flu.
Cristina: So? Kid's get sick. Derek's with her.
Meredith: Zola has the stomach flu.
Cristina: Oh, no. No, Mer, you can't be sick. You cannot be sick.
      Meredith: Okay.
Cristina: You're just freaking out. (Mer gags) Okay, just take deep breaths, okay? Just take deep breaths.
April (walks up): So, do you guys wanna register and then go get some lunch? (Mer pukes) Oh! Wh- What just happened?
      Cristina: Stomach flu.

    • April (after bumping into Kevin): Oh, Case Western Reserve. Uh, do you know Ted Stevenson, head of trauma?
      Kevin: I do, yeah.
April: He just offered me a job. I might be an attending there. April Kepner, Seattle.
Kevin: Kevin Banks, I'm the guy whose job you took. I was waiting to hear, but I guess I just heard. Thanks a lot. (walks away)
      April: Well, he hates me.
Alex (laughs): How do you do that? You've been here, like, two minutes.
April: My examiner is gonna hate me, too, instantly.
      Cristina: Don't psych yourself out.
April: One in five people fail the boards.
      Cristina: Fine. Psych yourself out.
Jackson: It's just a test. We've all dealt with worse. No one's bleeding out on your table. We will be fine.

    • Mark: I need you, Lex.
      Lexie: Hi. Uh-- Uh, what?
Mark: I need you. I'm doing a skin graft and I'm stuck with an intern who thinks that debriding the necrotic tissue is a title of a Nine Inch Nails album.
Lexie: Are you sure it's not?
Mark: It might be. I'm not familiar with their later work.
Lexie: You're just sad because Jackson is off to take his boards.
Mark: He and I work well together. We understand each other. Like you and I used to, you know? So I need you.
Lexie: I can't. Uh, I-I-I am way behind on all of this, um, research for Shepherd. You know, I was gonna pull an all-nighter to finish, so...
Mark: Alright. Thought it would be fun, working together again. But, if you're busy...
Lexie: Mark, wait. You should check out the latest Nine Inch Nails album. It is pretty... Fresh.
      Mark: Okay. (walks out)
      Lexie: I said fresh.

    • April: 23 minutes late? Not okay!
Alex: Is it too late to request a van without you on it?

    • Arizona: Look your examiners in the eye, don't stare. And don't-- And don't rush your answers. You know, it's okay to just take a second to just compose yourself. But don't-- don't take too long.
      Alex: Yeah, I got this.
Arizona: Yeah, I hope you do.
      Alex: What?
Arizona: I mean, I know you do.

    • Derek (about Zola): They called ten minutes ago. She started throwing up right after I dropped her off.
Meredith: She's really warm. Maybe I should stay.
Callie: No, babies get sick. It sucks, but it's the disgusting circle of life. We have trained too hard. I have personally put in hours of my life that I will never get back so you are not failing just because your mommy hormones are all 'code orange.'
Derek: Go to the airport. Pass your boards.
      Meredith: My baby is sick.
Derek: Well, lucky for her, her father's a doctor.
Callie: It takes a village. And Zola's village is chock-full of doctors. Okay? She will be fine. Go. Make me proud.
Meredith (to Zola): Alright. Mama loves you, Zo. You're my ZoZo. I love you. I'll be home soon. (walks off)
Derek: Hey, Torres, thank you very much. Do you mind looking after her for a minute? I gotta make some calls.
Callie: Uh, yeah. No. No. Sofia had that bug last week, so... I'm not getting anywhere near that.
Derek: What happened to, 'we're a village'?
Callie: It's a metaphor, Shepherd. Good luck.

    • Arizona: It's exciting, huh?
Bailey: They started off with so little promise, I feel like I'm witnessing a miracle.
      Arizona: Where the hell's Karev?
Bailey: Oh, he'll be here. I trained him right.

    • Teddy: Okay, don't overthink it. They want standard protocol, not cutting edge. I mean, this is a test in proficiency, and well, you're proficient in your sleep. So just make sure that you get a lot of sleep.
Cristina: You want me to be relaxed, right?
      Teddy: Exactly.
      Cristina: This isn't helping.
Teddy: You're right. Go! Kick ass!

    • Mark: Now have salmon for dinner. And tell room service to make sure it's not frozen. You lose omega-3s if it's frozen. Avery, are you listening to me?
      Jackson: I'm trying not to.

    • April: We should be gone by now.
Owen: The flight's not for three hours. You're fine.
April: I- I'd be fine if people showed up on time.
Owen: No one is going to be late. San Francisco is a short flight away. There's no reason to be nervous, okay? (April starts crying) Oh, not again.
April (sobbing): I'm sorry it's just that my parents called me this morning to wish me luck and they told me that their church is praying for me, and what-- what-- what if I don't pass? One in five people don't pass.
Owen: Kepner, stop. You're a trauma surgeon. We're soldiers. We fight battles harder than this test every single day, and we win, okay? So dry your tears. I want you to repeat after me. I'm a solider.
      April (sobbing): I- I'm a solider.
Owen: No, no. I want to hear you mean it. I am a solider.
      April: I am a solider!
Owen: Now get on the bus.

    • Meredith (opening voiceover): Picture this, you've spent the past five years of your residency training to become a surgeon. But those five years, suddenly don't matter. The only thing that matters, the only thing between you and your career is a test. In a random hotel, in a random place with a random examiner asking you random questions. Nervous? You should be.

    • Meredith (closing voiceover): Kindergarten. High school. College. Med School. Residency. That all leads to this moment. Some people can crack under the pressure others thrive. Either way there's nothing left to do. No more studying no more preparing. Like it or not the moment has arrived. The only thing left you to do is show up
