  • Meredith makes sacrifices for her marriage, Bailey has a possible love interest, and little Sloan takes off and admits she only was only using Mark.

    7.0
I was a tad bit disappointed that the writers spent so long building "little sloan's" character only to have her leave so abruptly. I also feel that Meredith is softening up a bit more than I would like. I feel the character we've known to love for a few seasons now is taking a turn to become some mushy "wife" instead of keeping her ground and sticking to her decisions. It is refreshing, but part of this show is all about the struggles she goes through, and now any struggle seems to be overcome by the thought that she's married and is more of an "emotional" person.moreless
  • Valentine's Day turns out to be nothing special: Lexie uses her blond ambitions to draw attention, Meredith adjusts to her new lifestyle with Derek as chief, and Sloan gives Mark an ultimatum that shifts to the opposite of what he truly wanted.moreless

I guess my expectations were a bit too high. When I read about Callie and Arizona going on a date, a double date with Cristina, Owen, Meredith, and Derek...I just thought that it'd be fun. But no. While the storylines were good, I just didn't like how it was set entirely in the hospital...I thought'd it be more like the holiday episode but not rushed and stuff...but the cases were touching and they were my favorite part of the episode. I really did not like how they (probably) wrapped up the storyline with Sloan. Even though I did not like her I thought it was rushed...and they could've easily done more. Oh well, and next weeks promo is so boring....and I bet you the episode will be good, at least I hope I won't be as disappointed with it as I was with "Valentine's Day Massacre".moreless
  • Powerful episode.

    8.0
A very good, and a bit different episode of Grey's Anatomy tonight. Rather than the spotlight being on Meredith and Derek and Yang, like so often the case, we saw Lexie and both Sloans, and even Bailey, get the chance to shine, with the last one even beginning a romantic relationship, something that seemed highly unlikely, even just a few weeks ago.

I liked this episode and the medical problems in it as they were simple, and yet uplifting at the same time, despite the fact that one of the patients died. They were feel good stories about hope and love and triumph and being special, and were what this show was once about during its prime.

Let this be the start of a return to prominence, and hopefully not the exception to what has been a mediocre season.moreless

    • Emile: (talking to Meredith about Mrs. Banks) Do you think she needs an extra blanket? She gets chilled every easily.
Alex: She must be one hell of a tipper.
      Emile: Sorry?
Alex: Well I can see why she comes in every week. I bet you take better care of her than her own husband.
Emile: Hmph when she first started coming in, before they met, we had a little game. She would try anything we served. She was adventurous, fearless. When she'd gone through the menu, I challenged the chefs to come up with something new. Hmph it became, she became, my favorite part of the week. Then one night, she came in with him. She felt like this was a safe place for a first date. hmph That ring on her finger, the night he proposed to her, I placed it in the creme brulee for her to find. I watched her say yes from the kitchen window. And they never stopped coming in. But now he orders for her, the same thing every time. For fifteen years I've watch their conversations grow shorter and shorter, until now all they do is eat. She has no children. If he dies. She'll be. She'll be all alone. She's so afraid. I can I can see and all I want to do is hold her hand in mine and tell her she'll be alright. That she doesn't have to be alone. If she doesn't want to be... You'll let me know when you have good news about Mr. Banks, yes?
      Alex: Yeah. Right. Of course.

    • (After she sees a sign at the Trustee's Breakfast that says 'Dr. and Mrs Derek Shepherd')
      Meredith: Mrs. Shepherd?!
      Derek: I know.
      Meredith: Mrs. Shepherd?
      Derek: I know.
Meredith: I don't do brunches. I don't miss surgeries. And I don't do Valentine's Day. You're gonna have to make this up to me with a lot of sex.
      Derek: Yes, dear.

    • Teddy: I said that I love you, and it's out there and I know that I can't un-ring the bell, but I'm un-ringing the bell. I- I take it back.
      Cristina: I'm gonna go...
Teddy: No, no, stay. I miss my friend, Owen. More than anything. I miss my friend. The rest I can deal with. I can deal with it. (gets teary eyed) I can deal with it. It's... I have a job that I love and an amazing student to teach, and I've got a cottage with deer, and a fish and various waxed body parts. I'm gonna be fine! You and I are gonna be friends. (to Cristina) And you're doing a valve replacement with me in ten.
      Cristina: Really?
      Teddy: Go prep 2219.
Owen: I'll see you at home. (Cristina walks off) You can't un-ring the bell.
Teddy: I know. But I'm gonna try like hell.

    • (Callie is taking apart the crib)
Mark: I don't believe you. You don't have to do that.
Callie: I wanted to before you got home.
Mark: And you don't have to do what you offered to do. I'm not gonna hold you to that.
      Callie: Mark...
Mark: But thank you so much for offering. And uh... it could be kinda great, right? (Callie takes another piece of the crib) What are you doing?
Callie (teary eyed): Sit down. (Mark gets teary eyed as he realizes)

    • Bailey: I can't talk to you, you make me nervous. I forget what I... And I say things that I don't want to say. And I can't... I just go stupid. I ... I like you. That's all. There.
      Ben: Alright.
Bailey: And so, if you wanna go to dinner, fine. We'll show up and try to talk.
      Ben: How's tomorrow night?
Bailey: Fine. I might have surgery.
Ben: I might join you. (laughs)

    • April (crying): I... I can't do this. I can't just... I can't just watch people die! I.. I shouldn't have come back.
Derek: Listen, I made a mistake last year. I almost walked away. If you don't feel the losses... if they don't hurt you, and humble you, then that's when you know you're not cut out for this kind of work. You can be a good surgeon, Kepner. It's why I brought you back.

    • Callie: Oh, come on. Did you even tell him that you're leaving?
Sloan: Look, I just wanted a place to stay and some money. I didn't know he was gonna care this much. He bought a crib.
Callie: Well, he's a good man. And he'll be very good to your baby. You could know the baby, if Mark raise him. You could come back and visit. And--
Sloan: Well, I don't wanna know where to come back to. I mean, if I give him to you guys, it's still my baby. And I need him to be somebody else's. I mean, my dad got a clean break from me. And look at him now. Don't I deserve that?
Callie (nods): Prenatal vitamins are not a joke. Take them. And do not skip any doctor's appointments. And if you get into any trouble, or you have a problem with anything... call us. (hands her some money) Just take care of yourself.
      Sloan: Thanks.

    • Arizona: How is he, Dr. Bailey? It looks like you're nearly done. And it's just in time for dinner. And maybe even some dancing. If the patient looks good...
Bailey: He'll be just fine. He won't be anytime soon, but when the time comes and wants to go out dancing, he will be perfectly capable of making that determination himself, without any help from anyone. And I don't need any help here, so if you are through helping me, you can go.
      Arizona: Well, I just...
      Bailey: Now. (Arizona leaves)
      Ben: She's nice. Chatty...
      Bailey: Stop talking.
Ben: To be fair, I never said a word about dancing, although...

    • Teddy: I rented aa house. And it's amazing. It's right on the water, a little cottage. and there are deer. Like Bambi deer and singing birds, it's incredible. ... I found this little secret coffee place just down the street from here. And uh, oh, I was thinking of getting a puppy. But, you know, you have to be home with a puppy and I'm always here. So I went down to the pound, 'cause I... I wanted to get it out of my system. You know, the puppy love. And I held all of these incredibly sweet dogs, and you would have been really, really, proud of me, Owen. I didn't take one home. I went out and got a fish instead. And lemme see, what else? Oh, I got a bikini wax. Yeah, an actual wax. You know, I haven't had one of those since, you remember when I tried to wax myself...
      Owen: What is your point?!
Teddy: You were my best friend! My best friend who I could tell everything to. And now you won't even look at me.
Owen: 'Cause you said you loved me.
Teddy: You said you loved me, too And then... And then you chose Yang.
Owen: You chose her, too. You chose her, too. I feel like I'm cheating on her. When I talk to you, I feel like I'm cheating on her. So, I'm sorry. ... And I miss my best friend, too.

    • Cristina: What are we doing?
Alex: Her boring husband's in surgery and this dude's been in love with her for 15 years.
Meredith: But she just found out. So we're waiting to see if she says something.
Alex: Or if he husband croaks.
Meredith: But it's okay if he does because they're miserable. I mean, is this what marriage turns into? Running out of things to say and changing who you are?
      Cristina: Yeah.
      Alex: Probably.
Meredith: Well, I didn't marry Derek to be the chief's arm candy. I'm a surgeon.
Cristina: Yeah, you married him for the great surgeries.
Meredith (laughs): I didn't do that either.
      Alex: Right.
      Cristina: You should've.

    • Sloan: I'm giving the baby up for adoption. I'm not a mom. I'm not ready. And I want him to have good parents and a good home.
Mark: No, don't do this. Don't give this baby away.
Sloan: They'lll love him. They'll love him more than I will.
Mark: Give him to me. I'll take him. I'll adopt him. I understand, I understand that you're not ready, but I am. And I know that I don't have the best track record. And I should have been there for you, but I'll be there for this baby, please.
Sloan: I want him to have a family and... You've been really nice to me the past couple months, but you're not a family. You're just a guy.
      Mark: Sloan, please.
Callie: I'll help. Uh... I'm right across the hall. And we're a family, sort of. We're best friends, and we're doctors and we're good people. Yeah, we'll take care of the baby... together. We'll love him. Really will.
Mark: Just think about it. We'll go home and talk about it. Can we talk about it?
Sloan: Yes, we can. We can talk about it.

    • Arizona: Dr. Warren, can you believe that Dr. Bailey almost left general surgery for Peds surgery? Did you know that?
      Ben: I did not.
Arizona: Yeah, she almost said no to general surgery. But then she thought about it, and she changed her mind. She wasn't afraid to rethink he decision. She just needed to be asked again.
Ben: I see. Clearly. (Bailey glares at Arizona)

    • Jackson: So Yang's with Hunt, Grey's with Shepherd, Torres is with Robbins. And you were with Sloan, until he dumped you. It's wonder you guys got any work done.
Lexie: He didn't dump me. He forgot about me. He decided that we were going to start a family, and didn't ask me. He forgot I was even there. He left me lying there in dirty dishwater.
      Jackson: What?
      Lexie: Nothing.
      Jackson: I'm pretty.
      Lexie: What?
Jackson: In my family I was always the pretty one. My face, my eyes... The body. You should see me with no shirt on. It's kind of ridiculous. But my family is smart, driven crazy overachievers. And they look like they're smart. They don't look like me. Which has its perks, except that my family treated me like I'm pretty. They expected nothing from me. Ever. They never pushed me. Never thought to. So I had to push myself. Hard. I didn't even tell them I was taking the MCAT's until after I aced them. My point is that you can't just change your hair. Okay? You wanna be unforgettable, you wanna not be mousey? You can't just change your hair. You have to actually change. Just sayin'.

    • April: Hi. I've got your keys.
      Meredith: What?
April: Dr. Shepherd told me you might not make it home before the breakfast, so I should just ask you what you need from your closet and I'll grab go it for you.
Meredith: You are not going in my closet. Aren't you supposed to be a surgeon?
April: He really needs you by his side at that breakfast.
Meredith: I am a surgeon. You tell the chief that I will be in surgery. (walks off)
April: So, I'll-- I'll just pick something out for you.

    • (Bailey is doing surgery)
Arizona: So Grandinetti's is gone. A Seattle instition. Dr. Warren, have you ever been there?
Ben: A couple times. Good scampi.
Arizona: Yeah, the place is so romantic. Perfectly lit, intimate. Those cozy little booths you know, in back. A little too intense for a first date, though. Bailey, where would you go on a first date?
Bailey: Isn't there a dying child somewhere?
Arizona: Nope. I had sometime, and I wanted to observe one... one of these. (Bailey scoffs)

    • Jackson (to Lexie): Wow. Tramua room Barbie.

    • April: Mrs. Shepherd?
Meredith: Huh? I'm not Mrs. Shepherd.
      April: You're not?
      Meredith: I'm Dr. Grey.
April: Right. Right. Um, Chief Shepherd wanted me to ask you about the trustee's breakfast in the morning.
Alex: You Shepherd's flunky now? Is that why he hired you back?
April: I'm on his service this week. And during this transition he needed a little bit more help on the adminstrative side. I'm not his flunky. So will you be going with him to the breakdast or meeting him there?
Meredith: I, um... am not sure I'm going.
April: Well... (laughs) You have to, you're his wife.

    • Arizona: I need you to reassign some anesthesiologists. You're being cupid for Bailey.
Derek: I don't do that. I did that once, and she yelled at me.

    • Lexie: Quit staring, I'm probably change it back anyway.
Alex: No, I get it. You get dumped by your boyfriend, and you go for the extreme makeover. Chicks always do that.
Lexie: I didn't get dumped, okay? I did not do this for Mark. I just... It's Valentine's Day and I wanted to change something, and I could change... I wanted to something for me. Okay? This, it was for me.
Alex: How's that different than what I just said? (walks off)
      Lexie: I'm changing it back.

    • Mark: Hey, Torres, you know anything about putting together cribs?
      Callie: You bought a crib?
Mark: Well, Sloan's coming home this week and I got one and I put it together but it wobbles. It can't wobble! Now, will you take a look at it?
Callie (laughs): You're like a sweet, nerdy now. I hardly recognize you.
Mark (sees Lexie standing by the nurses station, he doesn't know it's her): Who's the blonde?
      Callie: I don't know.
Mark: I may be a dad, but I'm still a single dad. Excuse me.
Callie (laughs): Okay, now I recognize you.

    • Mark: It must suck working on Valentine's Day. I don't believe we've met... (Lexie turns around and looks at him) Ahhh! What'd you do to your hair?
Lexie: I changed it. I.. I colored it. I just... (sighs) Wait, you thought I was someone else. You didn't know it was me, and you were hitting on me?
Mark: No, No... I pretty much thought that you were some blonde.
Lexie: You are pathetic. And hypocritical. And slutty.
Mark: And you are no blonde. You can't pull that off. Blondes are either bad-ass or fun. And you're... you're a brunette.

    • Meredith (closing voiceover): We have to keep reinventing ourselves almost every minute because the world can change in an instant, and there's no time for looking back. Sometimes the changes are forced on us, sometimes they happen by accident, and we make the most of them. We have to constantly come up with new ways to fix ourselves. So we change, we adapt, we create new versions of ourselves. We just need to be sure that this one is an improvement over the last.

    • Meredith (opening voiceover): The surgical scalpel is made of sterilized, carbonized stainless steel. This is a vast improvement over the first scalpel, which was pretty much a sharp stick. Medicine is constantly reinventing itself, that means surgeons have to keep reinventing themselves too. There's constant pressure to adapt to changes. It can be a painful process. But without it, you'll find yourself moving backwards instead of forwards.

    • April: There you are. I've got your wife's clothes for the breakfast, and I made note cards for your speech for this morning.
      Derek: Good, go home.
April: You're here, I'm here. Honestly, I'm happy to help with this.
Derek: You are? You want to be an executive assistant? You should want to do surgery; that's all I want to do.
April: I'm not sure I can. I… look, I-I'm grateful that you hired me back. It's just been easier to help out with this stuff. It's easier coming back as that, rather than coming back as the doctor who made a mistake and killed someone-- killed someone's mom. And I'm not sure I can be that person. So, if you're not sure that you need me, then maybe I shouldn't be here.
