Meredith finally returns to work for the first time since the hospital merger and is daunted by the competition that awaits her. Owen recruits Dr. Teddy Altman, an Iraqi veteran, as the new cardiothoracic surgeon, but Cristina is not happy about it. Meanwhile, Izzie finally returns with her high school mentor, who needs treatment for dementia, but she and Alex show very little interest in reconciling.
