He was great on Gunsmoke, and I also liked him as McCloud.

Strange that Dennis Weaver would be quoted in his obituary as saying that McCloud was his most satisfying role. I'd only read good things he'd said about his Gunsmoke years. Wonder what was more satisfying about McCloud ?

He got to be the star of McCloud.

Well, yes, but he won an Emmy as Chester, and rose to fame in that co-starring role. I find it hard to beleive he found McCloud more satisfying just because he played the lead role, but what do I know ?

You know as much as I do. All we can do is go by what Weaver said.

No big deal, but I wish the obit had included a few more lines explaining why Dennis considered McMcloud his most satisfying role. Maybe it was satisfying to know he could carry a series as the lead actor, as opposed to being one of the Gunsmoke ensemble ?

I think somewhere I heard, but don't quote me, that Dennis felt that Chester was somewhat limiting to his acting ability. McCloud on the other hand was something he had much more freedom in when defining the character.

I suspect that may have been behind his comment about his favorite part.

I'm 54. It made me sad that he died of lung cancer. He was great as Chester.
