Episode Summary

EDIT
Magnus
AIRED:
Chester is embarrassed when his mountain man brother Magnus comes to town to visit. They hadn't seen each other in years and to prove that Magnus is uncivilized and doesn't belong in town, he takes him to the most important places to see how much Magnus doesn't know. Well, Magnus wins at cards, outdrinks Chester, talks to Kitty, and proves himself worthy of his brother's admiration. While all this is going on, a Christmas Eve dance is being planned by the girls at the Long Branch. Lucifer Jones nearly runs Kitty and the other girls down in the street and breaks the saloon up trying to keep the Christmas party from going on. He declares that Kitty is the wickedest of them all, leading men to temptation and sin. Why? Because she's the prettiest, of course.moreless

  • Chester's brother Magnus unexpectedly shows up at Christmas time in Dodge City, and he's not exactly delighted to see him. Chester thinks that his brother is a rube and will be an embarrassment to him. Chester is in for a few surprises!moreless

"Magnus" is a great episode for any Gunsmoke fan. Dennis Weaver plays Chester Goode at his best. The episode makes use of most of the regular characters on the show and really illustrates the burgeoning connection between these stars and the characters that they portrayed for so long. The sub-plot line is a little contrived and campy for for the first season, that may be expected. Some parts are just laugh out loud funny. Millburn Stone is also a stand out with his one liners and sarcasm. If you're thinking of buying the first season and hesitating because it's black and white, don't. Buy it and enjoy it from the beginning.moreless
