His greatest assets in life apart from his wealth are charm, dynamic energy and a sharp intelligence. He is, in fact, a man of total privilege.Lord Shawcliffe, a powerful press magnate, implies that if Hadleigh joins the group he could eventually take control when Shawcliffe retires. James is torn between this tempting offer and his deep love of his home and native county. He discusses his problem with Susan Jackson and realises that she too has become an important part of his life his life. James proposes to Susan but she is caught off guard and refuses his offer of marriage. James declines Lord Shawcliffe's offer and arranges for Susan to go to London for an interview with a fashion magazine.
