Dr. Jane Halifax (Rebecca Gibney) rarely has time for fun and frivolity but she is about to be bridesmaid at the Greek wedding of her friend, Pauline, (Carolyn Bock) and she finds she isn't as interested or involved as she would like to be. Her throat is giving her trouble and Pauline and her fiancee are temporarily staying at her apartment before the wedding, making it difficult for her to have any privacy or to get any work done.

Weddings are soon placed firmly on the back burner when a wealthy Chinese woman, Mrs. Chung, and a young lady named Debbie Bailey are found dead, both inside an up-market empty house, their bodies stylishly dressed, made-up and posed. The murderer calls the Bailey family and tells them that Debbie is 'safe' and that he is looking after her. Her sister, Mandy, (Asher Keddie) is terrified as she is the one who took the phone call, and the girls' father, Frank, (Roger Oakley) crazed with grief, is blaming everyone he can think of and demanding that the police find the man who killed his daughter.

Jane is asked to assist the investigators with a profile of the killer as they are certain he will offend again. Doing this proves very difficult as the lead investigator, Detective Sergeant Tom Hurkos (Hugo Weaving) is completely unimpressed both with Jane herself and with the idea of profiling being able to assist in any way in the apprehension of the murderer. Hurkos makes things difficult for Jane at every turn and she finds herself losing her cool not only with him, but with bride-to-be Pauline and others around her.

To make matters worse, Jane and the police must contend with self-proclaimed 'psychic investigator' Eric Washburn, (Bruce Spence) who claims that he is in contact with the spirits of the dead and predicts that more killings will take place. Naturally, these pronouncements put him quite firmly on the suspect list himself, particularly as it was he who found the body of Debbie Bailey.

Jane sees a specialist about her throat problems, but they can find nothing amiss. Meanwhile, Tom Hurkos is fairly certain that he knows who the killer is; convicted rapist Terry Landsdown, (Grant Piro) who is terrified of Hurkos and continually states that he is not the killer. Hurkos refuses to believe this and is relentless in his efforts to make Landsdown confess, even though Jane is completely convinced that the young man is totally incapable of such an organised and deliberate series of crimes.

As the wedding gets closer and Eric Washburn is more insistent, there is indeed another death and Landsdown commits a rape while Hurkos deliberately frames him for the murders. Unable to take anymore, Landsdown commits suicide and Hurkos is suspended.

Jane's realisation about who the killer might be and how to find out is one of the highlights of any already excellent episode. Top-notch performances by Hugo Weaving and Bruce Spence as well as Grant Piro put the episode right into the Top 10 and a 'must-see' for anyone who likes a good story and a great plot twist.moreless
