A crusty grandfather is worried about the orphaned, young grandson he and his elderly wire are raising, especially since a greedy relative wants to take the boy and (especially) his inheritance. "Death" arrives in the form of Mr. Brink to take the old man away, but Gramps has no intention of going. Through some slick talking, Gramps tricks death into climbing an apple tree and then refuses to let him down.moreless

      • Ed Wynn was nominated for a 1958 Emmy award for this performance as "Best Actor-Single Performance-Lead or Supporting". The trophy went to Peter Ustinov for The Life of Samuel Johnson on Omnibus.

      • On Borrowed Time was first a 1937 novel written by Lawrence Edward Watkin. Its first successful Broadway run of 161 performances(February-November, 1938) was written by Paul Osborn. It was then turned into a 1939 movie by the same title starring Sir Cedric Hardwicke and Lionel Barrymore. It returned to Broadway (2/10-4/18/1953) before being adapted by writer James Costigan for this presentation.
