Pack of Lies
AIRED:
Adaptation of the stage play by Hugh Whitemore. A middle-class homemaker becomes involved in a 1961 espionage investigation in her suburban London backyard. Straightforward yet reserved Barbara, sharing a quiet life with her loving husband and their teen-age daughter, is visited out of the blue by an intelligence agent who cites national security and sets up shop in the couple's bedroom to watch for a "suspicious character" seen in the vicinity. But the agent is really after the family's neighbors, one of whom is Barbara's very dear friend. As the intrigue intensifies, Barbara undergoes a crisis of conscience that tests her loyalties, her confidences, and her sense of ethics.moreless

  • Inspired by the true-life case of the Krogers, a Canadian couple in the London suburbs who were actually spies for Russia, this film concentrates on the ordinary housewife who is the spies' neighbour - and who must spy on them.moreless

A British stage play which did well on Broadway is the inspiration for this American TV movie (filmed in England), and there's a certain cultural clash. The atmosphere is very forced, very false - these don't seem like real Londoners living in a real suburb at all, and the need for an American star is regrettable. Ellen Burstyn is a good actress, and she works hard at a British accent, but it's not convincing for a moment - she sounds far too upper-crust for an ordinary housewife (and she has real problems saying "Mum" instead of "Mom"); she never fits in with the real Brits. The play itself is at fault, too - why should the heroine feel so self-destructively guilty about betraying her friends when they turn out not to have been friends at all? Doesn't this woman have any anger in her?moreless
