The Greek legend of two friends who traveled to Syracuse when Pythias is accused of plotting against the tyrant Dionysius and is sentenced to death. Pythias asked his friend Damon to take his place while he returned home to settle his affairs. Dionysius agreed on the condition that should Pythias not return in time for his execution, that Damon would be put to death. Dionysius convinced that Pythias would not return and when the time approached and Pythias still had not returned, Dionysius was prepared to execute Damon. At the last moment Pythias returned apologizing profusely and explaining that his ship had been captured by pirates and he thrown overboard. He swam to shore and returned as quickly as possible.
