HBO does it again with another addition to their multicultural fairy tale series Happily Ever After Fairy Tales for Every Child. This time, Snow White is a Native American princess White Snow. White Snow is indeed the fairest in the land, much to the chagrin of Sly Fox. Sly Fox summons her powers of dark magic to put a spell on White Snow. White Snow is found and protected by seven tiny turquoise miners. It sounds like the same old story, but these ethnic twists make it seem like an entirely new tale. The voices of Graham Greene and Buffy St. Marie also spruce up this tried and true classic.moreless

Only HBO would have thought of staging the story of Rapunzel in New Orleans. The classic story is brought back to life with a Cajun/African-American twist. Also adding new zest to this animated gem are the voices of Whoopi Goldberg, Tisha Campbell, and Meshach Taylor. In this updated version, Rapunzel is captured by the evil diva Zenobia to become her apprentice diva. Never fear -- the story does end happily as Rapunzel is rescued by a brave prince. This updated fairly tale would have the Brothers Grimm wondering "why didn't we think of that?"moreless

What ever will princess Ebony do without the friends she so desperately wants? Her father, the king, has given her everything he can, except for friends she can call her own. This modernized fable finds the African-American princess Ebony kissing frogs in hopes of finding friends her own age. You'll notice the tale focuses on the princess finding true friends rather than true love, teaching the value of friendship. In the end, the enchanted frog teaches Ebony the meaning of being a friend. Danny Glover and Sinbad lend a hand in telling this yarn.moreless
