Al relays an order for 12 dozen buns, 50 pounds of hamburger meat, and 20 pounds of pickles to Chachi who is placing the order on the phone. Chachi says there are no pickles, so Al accepts raisins instead. Ralph comes dressed as a mouse and Potsie as a clock ("Hickory Dickory Dock") followed by Richie as Humpty Dumpty and Lori Beth as Mary (the one who had a little lamb) for the homecoming parade floats (the theme is nursery rhymes). Richie thinks he looks rediculous. He can't fit in the booth because of the size of his costume. Some girls roll out a red carpet for Fonzie as Chachi makes a trumpet sound. Fonzie orders three number-twos to go. He cracks some egg jokes at Richie's expense. Richie complains to Fonzie about his predicament. Fonzie leaves with his two girls for Inspiration Point. Richie tells Lori Beth that he can't wear the costume. After changing into a suit, he goes to a restaurant/bar to be alone and orders a root beer. A woman comes in and also orders a root beer. Richie buys the drink for her. She is a free lance photographer, and her name is Barbara Thomas. Richie says they are in similar fields (his being journalism). She lives on the road but has a place in Paris. Her favorite foreign language is Italian. He buys her another drink. Richie returns home in a very good mood. He is going to have dinner at the Pfister Hotel and orders some flowers (a dozen, long-stemmed roses) from Sunrise Florist. Howard asks who this new girl, Barbara Thomas, is. Richie says that "she's a woman." Richie dances with Joanie. At the restaurant, the bartender brings Barbara a package of photos from her Tahiti trip. She sold a photo layout to a travel magazine. Richie gives her a title for her story: "Romance is Alive and Well in the South Seas." She says he could be a big help to her on her next trip to Venice. She is leaving the next day and asks Richie to come with her. Richie indicates that he's willing to drop everything to go. Barbara says they should have a nightcap in her room. Back at the house, Marion discovers that Richie isn't home and didn't sleep in his bed. Richie arrives home and says he is going to Venice. Joanie leaves with Marion for her SAT test. Howard talks to Richie and brings up college and Lori Beth. Richie says that college will always be there and that while Lori Beth is a wonderful girl, Barbara is a wonderful woman. Howard asks him to really think about what he's doing. Richie talks to Fonzie at Arnold's about the trip. Richie takes Fonzie to the hotel to meet Barbara. The bartender gives Richie a note from Barbara who says Venice was cancelled and that she is going to Australia. She apologizes for not being able to say "goodbye" in person. At the house, Fonzie tells Howard, Marion, and Joanie the news. Richie returns home, and everyone comforts him. The next day, Richie, dressed as Humpty Dumpty, goes with Lori Beth to the homecoming parade.
