Fonzie drags Chachi and his mechanic, Tommy, out of Citizen Kane to show off his latest acquisition – a wrecked 1955 Chevrolet convertible. He remarks that the car symbolizes his favorite year, 1955, and that he wishes it could be 1955 forever. Chachi is disgusted that his night at the movies was interrupted for something so trivial.
Later that night, Fonzie is trying to start the car and, after failing to do so, manages to get the radio to work. He turns for a second and sees a beautiful woman standing in the garage. The woman, who introduces herself as Nancy Haley, explains that she is stranded and needs a ride home. She mentions that she once owned a car just like the one Fonzie plans to restore. Instead of letting her call for a taxi, Fonzie offers to take her home. Fonzie and Nancy spend the better part of the night riding around Milwaukee on his motorcycle, and gets her home at 4 a.m. - just in time for the morning paper to arrive.
The next day, Fonzie tells the Cunnignhams about Nancy, but they, of course, don't believe him.
Back at the garage, Fonzie discovers that Nancy left her purse behind and takes it to her house. However, the woman who answers the door is annoyed and confused ... especially because Nancy doesn't live there. However, the woman mentions that the previous couple that lived there did have a daughter who was killed in a car accident about 10 years earlier and that they later moved away.
A confused Fonzie thinks he may have seen a ghost and incoherently tries to get some answers from the Cunninghams. The Cunninghams just laugh at him.
Two weeks later, Fonzie has his car completely restored and, again, pulls Chachi and Tommy out of another showing of Citizen Kane. After they leave, Fonzie cleans the windshield and, out of the blue, appears Nancy sitting in the driver's seat. Fonzie can't believe his eyes and tells Nancy that she got him into a whole lot of trouble with his friends. To get his mind off things, Nancy coyly suggests that Fonzie take her for a ride.
While out riding around, it starts to rain, and the car stalls at a railroad crossing. Fonzie tries to get out of the car - perhaps thinking water had gotten into the distributor. However, Nancy inexplicably detains Fonzie in the car. A train begins to approach, and the signal lights come on. Fonzie, knowing his safety is now in jeopardy, tries to get away, but the doors lock. Nancy begins to smother Fonzie with affection and reveals that she "came" with the car and that she knows Fonzie had said that he wishes it could be 1955 forever. Fonzie struggles to get away from Nancy and get out of the car as the train speeds toward the intersection. He can't escape, and the train strikes the car with Fonzie trapped inside.
At the garage, Fonzie is moaning "no!" over and over. Tommy awakens Fonzie who discovers everything was just a dream. He tells Tommy that 1955 isn't his favorite year after all and that, in essence, if people try to keep living in the past, they risk losing everything.
