AIRED:
Peter and Annie Brennan are anxious to begin celebrating life as a couple again now that their children are all grown up, but it just doesn't seem to be in the cards. Their youngest, Tim, should be graduating from junior college, but instead he's moving in with the "older" woman-next-door, his mom's thirty-something tennis partner, Maggie. Their eldest, Todd, is the apple of his dad's eye and is engaged to a great girl - and having an affair with yet another great girl. And daughter Sara, the over-achieving family success story, is in the midst of a major emotional meltdown.moreless

      • Peter: School has never been easy for Tim. I know he's only graduating from junior college, but still, I am proud of him. You know who I'm really proud of? I'm proud of me! I know we both raised him, but it was always easier for you; you're patient, nurturing. For me, Tim was always a struggle, but I got through it! I mean, no matter how many times he failed, I dusted myself off I just kept loving him!

      • Annie: (to Peter) If you need me, I'll be crying on the floor of the shower!

      • (referring to Tim not graduating from junior college)
Annie: We should have known something was wrong when he said his major was "historical stuff".

      • Tim: Any response to that personal ad?
Sarah: No, but I bought a bird. His name is Eric. Eric Wasserman.

      • Annie: We should go look for [Tim].
Peter: Annie, he is twenty years old!
Annie: The streets don't check IDs Peter!

      • Annie: (to Tim) Please explain why your new girlfriend is the woman you used to call the "spooky old lady next door".

      • (talking about Tim and Maggie's relationship)
Peter: Maggie, this is insane. He is a child!
Maggie: No he isn't. Not anymore. He's a man.
Annie: He has a Michael Jordan poster on his wall.

      • (talking about Tim and Maggie moving in together)
Peter: You know what, no, I am saying no and I'm putting my foot down and I'm saying no.
        Tim: Dad, I'm staying.
        Peter: No you're not!
        Tim: Yes I am.
Annie: Tim, your Father has said no! He has put his foot down. There's nothing any of us can do about it now.

      • Peter: What the hell happened?
        Annie: I don't know.
        Peter: Everything was going fine.
Annie: And it's not just Tim. Sarah. Todd. They're all a mess. I'm beginning to think we didn't do a very good job.

      • Annie: You're killing me! You're killing Mommy!

    • NOTES (3)

      • Hamish Linklater ("The New Adventures of Old Christine") was originally cast as Todd Brennan in the pilot -- his scenes were filmed and appeared in early NBC promos (he also appears in circulating cast photos). However, he was dropped from the show and replaced by Jeff B. Davis, who re-shot the scenes prior to the airing of this episode.

      • This episode ranked as the second top-rated program of the night, garnering 14.7 million viewers, just behind lead-in Whoopi, which drew 15.1 million.

      • Early promotional pictures released for the show reveal Jeff Davis was not the original Todd in the series, and his scenes may have been refilmed for the pilot.
