Hard Spell is a BBC documentary series that chronicles the experience of over 100,000 students from the United Kingdom that participated in a nationwide spelling bee called Hard Spell. This event happened in the year 2005. Out of more than 100,000 students who signed up to participate in the competition, there are 30 regional semi-final winners who made it to the intense rounds of the in-depth competition that is covered by this serial documentary. The series shows excerpts of the rounds of spelling bee competition that whittles the 30 down to just two contestants for the final round. The final two are tasked with spelling a plethora of words that would challenge even college-aged students. The winner of the Hard Spell competition is Niall O'Neill who hails from Northern Island. He wins an award with ¬£10,000 in vacation money for his family as well as technology equipment for his school and the treasures, championship Hard Spell trophy.
