  • This middling episode is full of implausibilities and wastes some good guest stars. On the plus side, it works as a travelogue of San Diego County.

    5.5
It's frustrating when a show as good as Harry O stoops to the kind of implausibilities that fuel mediocre cop shows and bad horror movies. Unfortunately, in the worst of episodes the series sloppily trotted out such tropes at an astonishing rate, and this is definitely among the worst of its episodes.

In addition to a car that suddenly, predictably has trouble starting the minute Harry and Dr. Kira (Barbara Anderson) jump in it to escape a killer (Jerry Douglas), there's the question of why he's still chasing them at all: In earlier scenes, Harry has at least two opportunities to render the guy unconscious or even off him. Yes, it's well established by this point that violence is against Harry's creed, and that's one of the reasons I love this show -- but in the end, he's fine to have Kira do the offing, and that seems at least as against character as Harry pulling the trigger himself.

Before that happens, he and the doctor run away and leave the hit man intact -- and both times, they apparently take the most obvious route possible, because Douglas's character finds them in record time. Don't even ask about the chase around the hay bales or the impossibly strong signal from a transponder that's been planted on Kira...

Other faults abound: There are only a few lines of Harry's characteristic voiceover; he points a loaded and cocked pistol at an old pal from the force (James Olson) on an impulsive, hastily developed hunch; and Manny (Henry Darrow) is reduced to a walk-on for no good reason. Worse yet, Harry's beach house is nowhere to be seen.

There are some nice, previously unused location shots of San Diego and its surrounding foothills here, but overall "Material Witness" has the tossed-off feel of a Mannix episode. Next, please.moreless
