This episode introduces Hey Girl to the audience, dozing on the lobby stairs in the wee hours of the morning. Not only is there no explanation whatsoever for Hey Boy's abrupt disappearance, but Paladin and Hey Girl both indicate that they are well acquainted.
Paladin has occasionally carried a rifle in the previous three seasons, when the situation seemed to call for one. For this season, they elected to show him carrying a gun with his signature chess knight emblem embossed on the sides of the butt. Presumably this rifle, like his handgun, has been hand-crafted to his specifications.
Paladin: You get close to the girl, Lieutenant? Bryson: About a mile. I used eight-power government issue binoculars. Paladin: Eight into a mile; that's 222 yards. I have heard that the Nez Perce, when they're traveling with white prisoners, force them to daub dark clay on their faces. Cover their hair if it's noticeable. Bryson: Yes, sir. Most times. Paladin: Well, Lieutenant, do you consider yourself a qualified observer? Bryson: Hey, Mister, the whole United States Army says I'm wrong. I might be. Paladin: I'll need a guide, going in. Bryson: What are you after, the family's reward money? Paladin: Well, there is the girl, too. She might not like it where she is.
Anderson: Comes to me that you'd be worth killing. Paladin: How so? Anderson: You hold onto life hard. It will have to be torn away from you. To do so would be a fine coup for a warrior.
(Paladin has shot Anderson after being attacked) Paladin: Why? Why? Why, for the woman?! Anderson: What is a woman? Paladin: For the horse? He was yours for the asking! Anderson: A Sioux warrior going home...must take a coup. (Reaches to fondle Paladin's hair) What a truly fine head of hair you have.
