There is no record of when either episode was produced, but it seems a reasonable assumption that this one was made after Hey Boy's Revenge. Hey Boy shows no surprise that Mr. Paladin would track down robbers. Also, in agreeing to do so, Paladin openly states that he has a "job". Previously Hey Boy thought that he sold insurance or some such.
For the first time in the series, we hear a voice-over narration by Paladin, explaining that it took him three days to reach Big Pine--which consists solely of the boarding house.
(goof) As they show Paladin riding in, he is wearing a white tie. A moment later when they shown him arriving, he no longer has the tie on.
Chuck: Mister. Paladin: The name is Paladin. Chuck: Mister, that's what I meant. She's got my brand on her. Paladin: Which one, mother or daughter? Chuck: Look! Let's get something straight right now. In this country we shoot claim jumpers on sight. Paladin: (Brandishing a pheasant bone) Well, I'm sure they die very happy.
Paladin: Now young fellow, you're starting to sound like a sheriff. Are you? Chuck: No. But I reckon you know what a sheriff sounds like. Paladin: And I thought all this time that Big Pine was a very friendly place. Chuck: (Long pause) Not to everybody. (Walks out of stable) Paladin: Who put the burr under his saddle? Jed: He always rides that way.
Nancy: (Viewing Paladin's card) "Have Gun, Will Travel". Paladin: You're shocked? Nancy: No, just thinking...Can anyone hire you? Paladin: Well, I try to be a little bit choosy; in my profession, a man has to be careful of his reputation.
(Nancy and Paladin are discussing Chuck) Nancy: Well...he's gotta make up his mind one way or the other. Paladin: What do you want me to do, shoot him? Nancy: No. Just make him jealous. Paladin: Oh, I see, you want him to shoot me.
Chuck: Look, I told you. She's got my brand on her. Paladin: Young man, are you under the impression that Nancy is a cow?
Paladin: Mrs. Warren, you are a culinary oasis in a desert of boiled beef!
This is one of the episodes that was made over for the radio production of "Have Gun--Will Travel", airing on May 3, 1959. Jeanette Nolan reprised her role as Ma Warren--the only time that any actor did so.
