Episode Summary

EDIT
Out at the Old Ballpark
AIRED:
Paladin reads in a newspaper article that a hotly disputed baseball game in the mining town of Whiskey Slide resulted in multiple killings. The mayor of the town is calling for an honest umpire, so that the game can be played out. It turns out that the killings were merely journalistic exaggeration, but Paladin has already offered his services: he served with Abner Doubleday during the Civil War, saw National League games in Cincinnati, and witnessed the first curve ball ever pitched in 1876.moreless

      • Mayor: What do you want?
Paladin: I understood you were looking for an honest man.
        Mayor: Oh. You be Paladin?
        Paladin: I be Paladin.

      • Paladin: Mr. Goodbaby, you quoted Pope to me about sportsmanship, I will quote Plutarch to Mr. McNagle! "Though small boys throw stones at frogs in sport, yet the frogs die not in sport but in earnest." If I have to protect myself I will!
McNagle: All right. You're blind! But you'll be just as blind for us as you are for them, you hear?
Goodbaby: Very well done, Mr. Paladin. Very well done.
        Paladin: Goodbaby, play ball.
        Goodbaby: Oh, yes.
        Paladin: NOW!

      • Paladin: Now. I'm the only stranger in town. I've got nothing bet on either side, but I do have some experience in matters of violence.

      • McNagle: All right now, they agreed. We play the game. With Paladin here the only man with a gun on the field. Get 'em on. Come on.
Player: Now, we gotta get this over. I miss me wife.

      • Mayor: Here, here, what's wrong?
Paladin: Mayor Whiteside, what would you say if I told you this game was called? Tied?
Mayor: Called? Called on account of what?
Paladin: On account of possible early afternoon earthquakes, followed by plague and civil unrest.
