Mr. Fairchild is a "black widower" with seven dead wives in his background, the last being the daughter of an old friend of Paladin's. Paladin is determined to bring him in to stand trial. On his way back with his prisoner, they have to stop in a small village to honor an Indian burial taking place nearby. Paladin learns that Osage chiefs must be buried with a scalp, and the local sheriff plans to donate Fairchild's.moreless
