  • The World's No Match for Sarah Jane

The young leads, Duane Eddy as Whitney Tyler and Jena Engstrom as Sarah JaneDarrow, work very well together. The Tylers and the Darrows began killing one another in Kentucky and now if California the killing has continued, the latest victim being Sarah Jane's father who was killed by Whitney Tyler after he killed Whit's father. Paladin works to keep the two likable young people from killing one another. Jena Engstrom nails Sarah Jane -- every line, every gesture, every expression, the whole being of this want-to-be killer is spot on. And Duane Eddy holds his ground with her in this episode, directed by star Richard Boone who must have been pleased with the result of this episode.moreless

Girl: And I wouldn't do that neither, iffen I was you.
Paladin: Well, what would you do iffen you was me?
Girl: First of all, I'd hand me your gun--gentle-like. (Paladin sets his gun down) Then I'd turn him over. (Paladin does so) You kill him? (Paladin shakes his head) Then what are you doin' here?
Paladin: I saw that horse running loose and I picked him up and followed the trail.
      Girl: Why?
Paladin: 'Cause I wondered if I wouldn't find something like this.
      Girl: Why?
Paladin: Because there was blood on the saddlebags!
Girl: Well, it weren't your blood, was it, or blood of your blood?

    • Sarah Jane: Don't make no never mind. I know who killed him. A Tyler. And now I'm gonna kill me a Tyler.
      Paladin: A Tyler?
      Sarah Jane: Any Tyler.
      Paladin: What about your father?
Sarah Jane: Well, what I aim to do is about my father.
Paladin: Oh? (Walks over to the Tyler horse and takes a spade from behind the saddle) Well, a man doesn't have to be blood of my blood for me to do him the common courtesy of putting him into the ground.

    • (Sarah Jane and Paladin stand by her father's grave)
Paladin: "Any man's death diminishes me. For I am involved with mankind".

Sarah Jane: Words spoken over the dead should be from the Book. "The Lord my God is a jealous god".
      Paladin: "God is Love".
Sarah Jane: "Honor thy father and thy mother".
Paladin: "Love thy neighbor as thyself".
Sarah Jane: "An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth"!
Paladin: "Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy".
Sarah Jane: Don't you listen to him, Pa! I'll get me a Tyler, I'll get me a Tyler for sure, and then you can rest in peace.

    • (Paladin snatches Sarah Jane's shotgun, putting his derringer in her face)
Sarah Jane: (Laughing) Ah, that ain't no gun, that's a play-purty.
      Paladin: It's a gun.
      Sarah Jane: Why? Why?
Paladin: Because I thought that I had to protect you from others, and it turned out I have to protect the whole world from you!

    • (Paladin slips up behind the gunman with his derringer)
Paladin: Easy, now. Easy! I'll take that gun. (Gets a good look at his opponent) Well, the good Lord protect me from children!

    • (After a lengthy brawl, Whitney holds the struggling Sarah Jane at arm's length with his hand around her face)
Whitney: What in tarnation am I gonna do with her, Mister?
Paladin: You're gonna have to use your own judgement!
(Sarah Jane bites Whitney's hand, and Whitney knocks her cold with a punch to the jaw)

    • (Sarah Jane fingers the shoes her father had bought)
Paladin: When're you gonna try 'em on, Sarah Jane?
Sarah Jane: When it's time. You know, you gotta earn your purties.

  • NOTES (0)

    • Paladin's quotation from John Donne (1572-1631) comes from Devotions upon Emergent Occasions (1624). The passage is one of Donne's best known:

"No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main, if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friends or of thine own were; any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee."
