    Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

    • TRIVIA (0)

    • QUOTES (4)

      • Crabbe: What do you know about Molle racin'?
Paladin: Anything goes; get across the finish line first. Anything else I should know?

      • Crabbe: I got started by winning a Molle horse race.
Paladin: Why don't you ride this one yourself?
Crabbe: Know what my motto is, Paladin? Hire the right man to do your work for ya, and you'll wind up with more money in the long run.
Paladin: Well, you're the one that's trying to carve out an empire, what do you think of it?
Crabbe: I think I hired me the only man that could take my place in this race.

      • Paladin: How far is it?
        Crabbe: Oh, seven, eight miles.
Paladin: Seven or eight miles. Now, that's a long time to be out of the sight of any witness, two men beating each other's brains out.
Crabbe: That's why I'm payin' you a thousand. And that's why I hired me a gunfighter, a man that can take care of himself no matter what.

      • Paladin: Crabbe, bet my horse and saddle on the Molle.
Crabbe: You're betting on the wrong side, Paladin.
        Paladin: Perhaps not.
Crabbe: Because I hire bums to do my work for me, don't get the idea there's a man alive that can beat me in a race like this.
Paladin: Well, that's what we're here to find out.

    • NOTES (2)

      • Quite unusually for the time, most of the Indian parts were, in fact, played by Indians. Fifteen Warm Springs Indians were hired for this episode.

      • According to Andrew McLaglan, Richard Boone made it known that he did not want to film any "running inserts" (i.e, close-up shots) of the race. (Boone, although trained to look good on horseback, was never a "horseman".) McLaglan, knowing that the race would look boring without closeups, suggested that they could mount a saddle somewhere and film Boone pretending to ride. Boone did not like this idea at all, and agreed to do the inserts.

    • ALLUSIONS (1)

      • Paladin: "Canst thou bind the sweet influences of the Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion?"

Paladin is quoting from the Bible: The Book of Job, chapter 38, line 31.
