  • Paladin is asked to find Chaplain April, who, in an earlier episode, helped him when the chips were down. Paladin enlists the help of a former prisoner who is in April's moral debt, and they go out in the cold winter snow to rescue their friend.moreless

This episode would make an instant Paladin addict of anyone. Confronted with a mountain covered with heavy snow, freezing temperatures and a bad to the bone bad guy, Paladin and friend set out to rescue Chaplain April, succeeding despite the odds. When the former prisoner/friend is shot by the badguy, Chaplain April responds by helping Paladin rescue him and the bad guy, who pretends to be suffering from exposure. Chaplain April is an easy mark for someone in need, and although he, himself, has been exposed to the elements and is not well, works side-by-side with Paladin to get them all off the mountain. Paladin feels a loyalty to Chaplain April that he reserves for few men. As the story unfolds, you come to understand what sort of man could elicit such loyalty in a hero. This is an excellent tale well told.moreless

    • (Paladin has knocked Roy down and thrown his money back at him)
Roy: Let's get something straight, Paladin. I ain't ascared of you. And I ain't afraid of going up there after April.
Paladin: Nobody ever suggested that your problem was fear.
Roy: (Long pause) All right, I'll get my gear, and we can go. (To girl) You don't mind if one of my men take you home, huh?
Margie: I most certainly do mind! Look, I'm not one of those girls you can--
Paladin: Why don't you let the young lady take care of the money?
(Roy gives her a long look)
Roy: Vice-a-versa. (As he leaves, Margie immediately starts grabbing the money)

    • Paladin: Robert April's a man that never did one thing for me. Probably never can. And right now he's depriving me of bed, board, and comfort. There's no reason for any of this. No reason for April to be up here, and certainly no reason for you and me to be up here after him. Except that I respect him more than any man I ever met.

    • Roy: Mr. April, please. Listen!
Paladin: Eh. Maybe he might hear this. Robert April! Chaplain! Now listen to me. You've been lying! All that preaching. All those sermons, you were lying to us! Weren't you, Robert April? Admit it, now!
      April: No...no...no...can I help you?
Paladin (smiling): Any other man would have said, "help me".
