  • Not the best episode of HIGNFY by a long shot, but then it is a Pilot.

    5.5
Years later, Paul Merton called this first episode of the series "awful". And he wasn't fair wrong. Considering the greatness of this series today, it is difficult to think the first outing was so dire.

The show opens with Angus painstakingly reading from an autocue, refusing to move his eyes or show any emotion. He cracks the jokes that have been written for him, but nothing other than his ussual reading voice. To make matters worse, the jokes aren't even good! For example:

Angus: We now have the man critics call "Mr. Comedy", no wait, it's Mr. Merton. Paul Merton.

This episode is full of jokes like this.

There are far too many rounds in this first episode that make it hard to keep up and Angus is too strict on the rules. For example, in the missing words round he refuses to let Paul have a go at Ian's.

Angus seems tense, Ian is completely unlikeable and Paul seems totally uninterested in what's going on (and the set looks like it's going to fall down at any minute!).

Thank goodness the BBC had the sense to keep the show on, but I am left wondering "why?" after this mediocore opening episode.moreless
  • Not quite the show it was to become later on, but still not too bad

Angus looks nervous, a lot like Clive Anderson did with the first show of Whose Line Is It Anyway, and Paul seemed uncomfortable at times. But besides that it seemed like a decent first episode, about what you should expect from a first episode. Sandi was very good, she got a lot of laughs. Ian did well too, and I would says that Ian and Sanid deserved to win this show. Paul cracks a few witty remarks but isn't quite there yet, and his voice sounds completely disinterested. Kate did not impress me. I would say the best round here was the missing words round, the rest were really nothing special . Overall decent at best.moreless
