  • An armored car heist ends with two of the three guards dead and none of the money stolen. The sole lead in the case forces Danny to ask his ex-wife for permission to set up surveillance in her home.moreless

"Heihei" could possibly best the best episode of the series to date. The problems I have mentioned in the past with cliche and formula plots are almost nowhere to be found here. The story of the armored car heist was very well written and took some very clever turns that certainly help keep the viewers' interest. There was a good amount of action and suspense in this episode which just added to its entertainment value. The scenes with Danny and his ex-wife were a little contrived (remember I said cliches are almost nowhere to be found). An episode worth seeing.moreless
  • This show is definitely getting better!

First: I must lament that critiques on here typically meet with tragically predictive support. Positive reviews get a "thumbs up" and critical reviews often get a "thumbs down". Hopefully this is only superfans and not show staff, as I think critical reviews are important.

In this case, I found the show to be a lot of fun, and entertaining. The plot offered new twists and was not predictable. The ending was nice as well.

I'm eagerly waiting for the producers to introduce more underlying subplot regarding corruption in the police department but this episode was truly among the best. I cannot wait to catch it next week.moreless
  • After the robbery of an armored truck that leaves two dead and one seriously injured, the team tries to figure out the next target, and Danny ends up in close quarters with his ex-wife.moreless

The previews had me intrigued, and it carried into the episode. The story was intriguing, and the interaction between the four main characters was always enjoyable- especially the scenes with Danny and Steve. The highlight of the episode, however, was once again Scott Caan. Danny went through a few harder emotions here, and he portrayed them wonderfully. Facial expressions, eyes, voice- all expertly done. There wasn't as much Steve/Danny banter here, though the quips were good. So once again, the writers/director/producers have done a great job putting a great story on the screen- and they threw in some good character development for good measure.moreless
  • Do I sense some regret amongst the Williams'?

    7.5
Danny's former wife is a real cracker, but I guess she'd have to be to have been married to him, or she'd never have survived. This was an interesting and creative way to involve her in the story line and I'm glad we got to see her as opposed to just hear her over the intercom at the foot of the driveway! I'm not sure that I would have done that to my Mercedes, however!

I'm not sure I get the point of it all; the whys and wherefores of this particular caper, though the false starts and misdirections in the trail were an interesting watch. I did like to see more real involvement in the background work and the final capture by Chin and Kono. I've been waiting for some substance there...

And if nothing else, Steve has come to see that Danny's wife is no shrew, as he might have believed...or been led to believe. More importantly, I think Danny has come to see the same.moreless

    • Danny: Please tell me; tell me, when did you go from boosting laptops to capping people in the back of the head?
Gordon: I don't know what you're talking about.
Steve: That's not true. You were there.
      Gordon: Where?
Danny: Don't play dumb, Gordon. I hate that. It's a personal pet peeve of mine. Alright.

    • Steve: So what happened to you two anyway?
Danny: You two who? What are you talking about?
      Steve: You and Rachel.
Danny: (Crackles a chip bag) Breaking up, I can't hear you.

    • Rachel: Would anyone like tea? (Danny smirks) Do not mock me, Daniel.
      Danny: I wasn't mocking you. I wasn't mocking you. I think it's cute. We're doing a stakeout and you're offering teatime.
Rachel: It's called civilization. Would you care for anything, Commander McGarrett?
Steve: No, thank you, Rachel. Um, but could you tell me how many people live next door?
      Rachel: Just a couple.
      Danny: So, two?
Rachel: Last I checked, that's what a couple was.
Danny: Mmm. That's cute. Oh, you know what we should do. Uh, we're about to take them down, so maybe beforehand, we invite them over for a game of tennis. Tea and tennis.
      Rachel: Bite me.(walks away)
      Danny: That's very civilized.
Steve: She's cool, man. She's cool. I don't know how you got her.
Danny: How did I get her? Hey, I am a good catch.
Steve: No, really. How'd you get her?

    • Danny: You know, I just had a thought.
      Steve: Don't hurt yourself.
      Danny: That's funny.

  • NOTES (4)

    • The title of this episode, "Heihei" is Hawaiian for "Race". However the orginal title, "Hao'Kanka" means "Iron Man".

    • Originally titled "Hao' Kanaka", the title was changed hours before the initial broadcast. That original title was apparently Hawaiian for "Iron Man", a clear reference to the famous Ironman World Championship triathlon race that takes place in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, every fall. That race is often referred to simply as "Kona" in the triathlon community. This episode revolved around a group of triathletes and the climactic scene was set during a triathlon race.

"Ironman" is a trademark of the World Triathlon Corporation. The WTC website indicates that unauthorized use of the IRONMAN trademark is prohibited. It's very possible that trademark issues led to the change of the episode title.

  • ALLUSIONS (1)

    • Danny: Steve the Science Guy is back.

Danny says this in reference to Steve using the dust from a bag inside a vacuum cleaner and a feather from a duster in order to get finger prints- instead of using Kono's fingerprint kit in her car. This alludes to the kids science program " Bill Nye: The Science Guy ". Bill Nye wants to foster a scientifically literate society, helping people understand and appreciate the science that makes our world work. He is a scientist, engineer, comedian, author, and inventor, but is known for his kids program. He has also made guest appearances in some episodes of scripted televisions series, such as Stargate Atlantis.
