Hawaii Five-0 got the new year started off with a vengeance with a fantastic episode. I certainly hope this episode is a sign of things to come. So far this season there has not been an episode which held my attention more than this one. One of the things I liked was that McGarrett's sister was rescued right away. It was a little odd that the kidnappers let her keep her cel phone, but it was good to have that out of the way so the episode could focus on the investigation itself. I hope the show keeps it up!moreless
  • This show just officially became excellent.

Now I don't know if they can or will maintain the momentum but this episode was probably better than the best of the original series, and I would NEVER have believed I would say that.

There is the Wo Fat set-up of the original "Cocoon" Parts I and II, and even better Wo Fat behind the scenes intrigue than "Fourty Feet High, and it Kills" or "Ninety Second War". This iteration of Steve McGarrett almost, but thankfully not quite, missed the mark with Wo Fat. Just so perfect, the hubris of the real man behind the events of the past few days, to give his name and then ride away into the sunset...so to speak, and for now.

    Well done.

Well done writing. Well done acting...probably Alex O's best of the series, and I even admit to being wrong about MaryAnn. Though I have my doubts she's safe in LA...

This bodes well, I hope, for a really intriguing and much deeper second half of season one. Jack Lord would be proud.moreless
  • It left me speechless

    9.5
This episode had everything that made me like this show in the first place and then some. it has always been visually attractive - curtesy of both cast and locations, and the action was very well filmed as well. and the scene in which Steve drove up the stairs on the motorbike? awesome. the case kept me interested from beginning to the end which ios always a plus point. and then there were the relationships. we got more insight into who Steve is and his relatiosnhip with his sister. who was awesome this episode. and we got more cute banter from Steve and Danny. and we got a story arc. all I have to say to that is: Hello there, Marc!moreless

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (4)

    • Goof: In the Five-O office, Kono has already pulled up the information on Hiro Noshimuri on the monitor and Steve is clearly looking at the monitor, but he still asks her what the man's name is; only when she tells him does he realizes it is the same name in the "stick figures" code he has just solved.

    • Goof: Mary Ann McGarrett told Steve that the "stick figures" code their father had written down was probably derived from a Sherlock Holmes short story, The Adventure of the Dancing Men, one of the stories their father had read to her when she was a child. In the scene at Five-O HQ, Steve is seen reading the first story in the first short story collection, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes; however, The Adventure of the Dancing Men is actually the third story in the third collection, The Return of Sherlock Holmes.  Steve does tell his team that he has actually solved the code using a mathematical formula, Frequency Analysis, which Kono explains is a set of frequency or group of letters in a cypher text.

    • Goof: When Mary kicks out the tail light from inside the trunk she would have to have kicked the passenger side light from the way she was lying. When spotted from the chopper the driver's side tail light has been kicked out.

    • Goof: When Steve is talking with Mary Ann at the office, a few shots show Mary Ann's hair covering her bandage; while others have the bandage exposed.

  • QUOTES (4)

    • Steve: We busted a mole there a while back. And if he found out you were asking questions, he could've passed it along to all the wrong people. I mean, I can't believe you did this, Mary.
Mary: Well, I mean, dad's a cop. You're like a freaking ninja. The least I could do was dial a phone.

    • Steve: I want to know everything there is to know about Hiro Noshimuri. Every business he runs, every family member he has, every friend. I want to know where he eats, where he sleeps. We're gonna tear into his life and rip it apart.
Danny: I have never liked you more than I do at this moment. It's beautiful.

    • Steve: I'm not my father. I don't have a wife and kids to protect.
Danny: Right, but that doesn't give you license to do something stupid.
Steve: Like what? Put bullets in Koji and Hiro's heads?
      Danny: That would qualify.

    • Governor Jameson: Is there any beer in this office?
      Steve: What?
Governor Jameson: I've never known a navy man who couldn't find a lady a beer.
