Goof: The character dressed as Sisko from DS9 states that there were no brothers on the Enterprise in the Star Trek universe, but on Star Trek The Next Generation Levar Burton played Lieutenant Commander Geordi LaForge, the chief engineer of the ship. A fan of the Star Trek universe, such as someone who would dress as a character at a convention, would certainly know this.

Goof: When interviewing the character playing Sisko from Star Trek DSN, the actor corrects Danny who calls him Kirk, saying he is Commander Sisko. But he is wearing 4 rank pips on his collar which makes him a Captain.

Goof: In the Five-O office, Kono has already pulled up the information on Hiro Noshimuri on the monitor and Steve is clearly looking at the monitor, but he still asks her what the man's name is; only when she tells him does he realizes it is the same name in the "stick figures" code he has just solved.

Goof: Mary Ann McGarrett had told Steve that the "stick figures" code their father had written down was probably derived from a Sherlock Holmes short story, "The Adventure of the Dancing Men", one of the stories their father had read to her when she was a child. In the scene in the Five-O HQ, Steve is seen reading the first story in the first short story collection, "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes"; however, "The Adventure of the Dancing Men" is actually the third story in the third collection, "The Return of Sherlock Holmes".
However, Steve does tell his team that he has actually solved the code using a mathematical formula, Frequency Analysis, which Kono explains is a set of frequency or group of letters in a cypher text.

Goof: When Mary kicks out the tail light from inside the trunk she would have to have kicked the passenger side light from the way she was lying. When spotted from the chopper the driver's side tail light has been kicked out.

Goof: When Steve is talking with Mary Ann at the office, a few shots show Mary Ann's hair covering her bandage; while others have the bandage exposed.

Goof: The bomb around Chin's neck is stated to be mercury motion sensor that will detonated if he moves. Yet, each time Chin looks up to talk, the device on his neck moves.

McGarrett's archnemesis from the original series, Wo Fat, is first introduced in this episode.

: When Matinsky's license is shown it says he is 5ft 11, but when McGarrett is informing the crew of the Eternity about Matinsky he says he is 6ft.

Chin is fluent in Chinese.

A lot of Hawaiian surfer lingo is used in this episode. "Brah" is bro (brother/friend/buddy), to "Eat It" means to wipe out really badly, "Dakine" means, "the best", "aggro" is short for aggressive and "Howzit" is hi/hello.

Goof: When Ian's assistant shows Coral Prince's recent expenditures to Chin Ho, he asks her who the Gillis Brothers are. However, there's nothing on screen that gives any indication who payments were made to, just check numbers, amounts, and a basic category. It's not until several seconds later that the assistant then brings up further details of a specific payment, at which point the Gillis Brothers name is actually revealed.

Goof: Danny has a bad left leg and throughout the episode he is using the walking stick with his left hand. But in the last scene where he escorts Ellison away he is using the right hand.

Goof: The bedroom scene with McGarrett and Catherine opens with McGarrett hitting the alarm clock and knocking it over when the alarm sounds. Minutes later, in a wider shot, the clock is upright again on the bedside table.

The microbes Chin refers to in the episode may be a spirochaete bacterium called Leptospira, which causes a nasty bacterial disease called Leptospirosis. It is endemic throughout all fresh water streams, lakes and ponds throughout the state. Symptoms include high fever, severe headaches, muscle aches, nausea and vomiting.

Kahuku High School, located in the town of Kahuku on North Shore, where the football game in the opening of the episode was being played, does have an outstanding varsity football team, but they are the Red Raiders, not the Kings.

Goof: In the pilot Danny's car is a grey Mustang. In this episodes and in future episodes, the car is a silver metallic Camaro

Goof In the pilot episode, McGarret's naval uniform is shown with two rows of ribbons/medals on it. At the end of this episode, his uniform is shown with seven to eight rows of ribbons/medals on it.
