  • A young likeable Vietnam vet buys a rifle and terrorises traffic as he recklessly shoots at cars. When the sniper becomes a cop-killer, McGarrett and the team attempt to bring him out from his impregnable hideout in a hillside bunker.moreless

    9.5
A tense episode which stays fixed in one location throughout, evoking a sense of claustrophobia (an achievement on a road beside the Hawaiian coast). The sniper initially appears to be your standard nutjob, until we learn the details of his instability. McGarrett's outburst at the psychiatrist is understandable but a little unjustified. Surely the intelligent head of Five-O would realise the situation the psychiatrist was in. The climax sees Danno making a brave attempt to take out the sniper, but is winged by the crazed gunman. The final shot of the episode is both disturbing and chilling, bringing home our false expectations of 'villains' being two dimensional and insensitive.

The storyline maybe minimal but this episode undoubtedly one of the series' highlights. Excellent camerawork and the skilful construction of a tangible atmosphere make this a must-see!moreless

  • TRIVIA (3)

    • When McGarrett rushes to climb aboard the helicopter, it is clearly not Jack Lord but a stand-in.

    • Danno is sent to fetch Dr. Fernando from the state hospital. We see the helicopter setting down. Clearly, there are only two men on board, including the pilot; the passenger is definitely not Dan Williams -- yet that is who emerges from the helicopter, accompanied by the doctor.

    • Billy Shem signs the firearms application purchase form "George C. Patton"; incredibly the clerk doesn't pick up on this.

  • QUOTES (1)

  • NOTES (2)

    • Herman Wedemeyer plays an HPD officer named Duke Kanaha, the first time he appears as a character named "Duke." In a later Season 4 episode, "While You're At It, Bring In The Moon," he played a character named "Duke."

Beginning with the first episode of Season 5 ("Death Is A Company Policy"), he would play the character of Edward D. "Duke" Lukela, a recurring character in Seasons 5 through 8. Wedemeyer became one of the main cast members for Seasons 9 through 12. Duke Lukela was an HPD officer who rises up through the ranks to become a detective with the Five-O unit.
