  • McGarrett gets blinded by a car bomb and spends the rest of the episode in the hospital as the 5-O gang searches for the bomber.

Hawaii scenery/landmarks: The classic "Ghostbuster" ambulance rides through Kalakaua and Kuhio Street in Waikiki. McGarrett is admitted to Leahi Hospital across from Diamond Head. Danno drives past the familiar IBM building in the Ward area.

Notable stars: Marion Ross plays Nurse Lavallo, and is obviously well known to all as Mrs. Cunningham from Happy Days. Coincidently, Ross also played a children's doctor who made a house call in the season 1 Brady Bunch episode entitled Is There a Doctor in the House? Harry Endo plays Che Fong for the first time in the series. Endo was in numerous Honolulu Federal Savings commercials in the 70's and 80's.

Jenny, Danno, Kono, Chin Ho, and even the Governernor himself give McGarrett a surprse birthday party at the office. It's funny to see them all singing happy birthday in Hawaiian (Hauoli La Hanau), and Jenny giggles and jumps up and down like an overzealous cheerleader. It would've been classic if Wo Fat had attended while wearing a pointed party hat. McGarrett later goes out to his car, which had a bomb planted in it while he was blowing out his candles. Luckily McGarrett drops one of his gifts and goes to retrieve it because the explosion only knocks him off his feet and temporarily blinds him instead of sending pieces of him scattered about the palace grounds. Nurse Lavallo tends to his needs at the hospital as he recovers, and as she walks him through the corridor to test his senses he recognizes the smell of a favorite Hawaiian breakfast. "Portuguese sausage!" Meanwhile, Danno, Kono and Chin Ho shake down all the local thugs they can trying to find the culprit. The bomber, who works at a Volkswagen repair shop, later sneaks into the hospital to finish the job. McGarrett grapples with him after the lights go off. Lord stretches the believability level as he calls out where the guy is - "11:00!" - and then strikes at him. Silly bomber - never wrestle in the dark with a blind man!

I rate this episode as "They did this one already" only because of a similar season 1 episode where McGarrett gets shot on the beach and ends up in the hospital while Danno and the 5-O bruddahs take charge. This episode is well done and I don't knock the similarity. (I just wanted to put something else besides my often-used "Above Average.")moreless
  • Steve gets a surprise party and surprise car bomb. Temporarily blinded, he must come to grips with the condition and it's limitations, while the would be assassin is still on the loose. A not-so-friendly-at-first nurse aids-then falls for our hero.moreless

    3.9
Quite possibly the worst episode to date in the series. What starts out with great promise (a car bombing targeting the Five-O commander) turns into comical farce as Jack Lord is totally unbelievable, and over the top in trying to convince us that his temporary blindness is real. The fake stumbling/squinting/etc. is laughable. His faux frustration when flailing around the hospital is damaging to the credibility of the stoic/iconic character.

Marion Ross is believable as the spinster nurse, but not so much as the compassionate care-giver; let alone as the nurse who falls for the patient she turns out to be.

This is the episode that should have been left out of the Season 2 DVD set.moreless
