Murder and intrigue strike the world of international tennis.
A lot of device is used to set up the plot in this episode, not always well-tied together. A defecting Russian tennis star and her American boyfriend are implicated at the same time that another Russian male player is involved in diamond smuggling and murder. While these devices lay hanging for most of the episode, the focus is left on the standard plea by a Soviet security chief for the return of his player - predictably catching McGarrett in the middle.
The tennis action is tepid and uninspiring, surprising in that this was filmed at the height of the tennis craze in the United States. Kurt Russell displays one of the most atrocious Russian accents I've yet to hear on camera, while the main protagonist hems and haws about surrendering herself for too many scenes. And with all of this, the climax focuses on a war of wits between Five-O and the security officer, taking the choice out of her hands.
While there is a good roster of guest actors here, the script and direction fails to make them believable in most respects.moreless
