  • A strange episode, combines mystery and detective work but hard-to-follow and with unexplained elements.

    4.7
A man flees prison to prove that he was framed for his estranged wife's murder.

I can almost see where this episode wants to go, it breaks out of the normal mode of the series and sets up a mystery that isn't solved until the end, somewhat like "Highest Castle, Deepest Grave" - but it really introduces some credulity problems.

The episode begins with a breakout at Oahu State Prison, but right off the bat, the idea that McGarrett and Manicote would actually let an escaped prisoner go about his business in order to get new information on a past crime is unbelievable. Zohra Lampert is sort of creepy, but her "paranormal" sense is more of an idiosynchrosy than necessary to the story. Uncertainty about her "communication" with her supposedly dead mother actually confuses the viewer following the story. Its also not completely made clear how the final "switch" was accomplished, critical to the story but perhaps left out by tight editing for time. I did like the ex-cop character and his take on the original murder, its fun to watch him trade stories with McGarrett.

I like new kinds of stories, its just not effective to use "Five-O" as a substitute for "Ellery Queen", they just don't come off well in that arena.moreless
