  • Unrealistic, but a straight-up classic McGarrett vs. Wo Fat showdown with the fate of the world hanging in the balance.

Wo Fat uses impressive resources to bend McGarrett to do his bidding.

What a show here, the "Five-O" that's the poor man's James Bond on the little screen.

Its somewhat ironic that this classic installment is also one of the last of the excellent "Hawaii Five-O" episodes. Season 9 marks the move of the Five-O offices out of the Iolani Palace in the series and a fall-off in writing quality behind the series. But this second installment of what was originally a two hour season premiere movie brings the goods. In part 1, Wo Fat has already used master deception to gain possession of a deadly biological poison in Hawaii, and here he squares off against McGarrett in Hong Kong using his strongest arsenal of weapons -- a brainwashing lab high in the hills over Hong Kong, a rogue military friend stationed in the People's Republic of China, and executive control over Hong Kong's deadliest Triad -- the "Nine Dragons." Excellent and exciting episode, including the mind-control torture of McGarrett, the alliance of Five-O with Hong Kong intelligence (including a traitor in their midst), and the avenging "Nine Dragons" carrying out orders to kill. Chin even bonds with Red Chinese "agents" (TRAVEL agents) over an "ancient Chinese proverb."

Of course, the story stretches it a bit, lots of spy-fi, and the unbelievable premise that the world would somehow launch into nuclear exchange based on the stilted and slurred speech of a brainwashed head of a police agency in Hawaii -- but who cares -- this is grand drama. Its a shame that after this match-up, McGarrett would not meet Wo Fat again until the sad series finale, "Woe to Wo Fat."moreless
