  • A mediocre installment with a mixture of hard-bitten characters and story with corny and stilted romance.

    5.2
McGarrett uneasily agrees to holding a wedding and honeymoon for two criminals in exchange for testimony against a narcotics lord.

There are good and bad things going on in this episode, typical for the series in the middle of its run. Patty Duke turns in a great performance, more than tough enough to hold her own when bargaining with McGarrett and Manicote. She fawns a bit too aggressively over her new husband (and fellow Detroit criminal) but it's not too distracting. The plot is good, no more implausible than most for the series. Character actors Gerorge Herman and Richard Collier are excellent alternatives as greasy henchmen for the mobster, a nice switch from the giant silent thugs of most stories.

The subplot of McGarrett meeting an old flame, this time international photographer Margo, doesn't play - as usual. There rarely came a good synchronization of Jack Lord and the writers when it came to romance stories, he always comes off as stiff, awkward, and far too sanctimonious as the "cop who is married to his job". There has to be a better way, as shown in "The Singapore File", but it just never came to be after that great Season 2 episode.

I'd like to say this has a higher quality than it does, but the mix of over-acted romantic tragedy and cyanide poisoning leaves the stomach a little unsettled.moreless
