  • An interesting episode that covers many bases, from international relations to the true nature of good and evil - all over a stolen violin.

    8.1
A priceless violin causes friction for McGarrett and a visiting Soviet delegation.

This episode doesn't deal with a huge theme but is one of the really nice character studies of the series. It also has an interesting take on the true face of evil. Flanders is serviceable as a Russian violinist and the trashy punks who fence the violin and then kill to get it again are excellent, if broadly drawn. McGarrett and the Governor really throw down about orders from the State Department, and unlike most engagements, neither apologizes.

Albert Paulsen is excellent in his role, shifty and rat-eyed. The character is written in an intriguing way. Not only is the Soviet diplomat willing to bypass the law to get the violin back, he purposely risks the life of a comrade specifically because if all goes wrong it could still be a propaganda coupe. The viewer might really wonder who is worse, the low-life killers or the upright government representative. I especially like the role of the blind violin teacher Mazzini, he bridges the action as a moral man who realizes the value of the priceless instrument and is killed for his altruism.

While the subject matter might tempt a viewer to skip this installment, it's well-worth watching.moreless
