Hec (about the stage robbers): They weren't cold killers.
Norma: And how would you know that?
Hec: I've known a lot who were.

Stamp: The town council must have told you that you weren't my first choice for deputy chief.
Hec: No, but I'm glad you did.
Stamp: Just didn't want you to hear it from someone else first.

Stamp: The men call me chief or sir.
Hec: All right, chief or sir.

Hec: If you're a proper doctor, how'd you come to barberin'?
Coogan: Same way I cam to eatin', mister. I had to.

Stamp: All police personnel carry issued weapons.
Hec: All right, I'll carry it. As long as I can use my own.

Stamp: You tryin' to make this murder?
Hec: Only if it was--Chief.

Pratt (about the murder): You came out here lookin' for clues. Why?
Hec: Oh, I'm gonna be lookin' in a whole lotta places.

Judge: The next time you come after a warrant, Ramsey, I'd just as soon the suspect wasn't sittin' in my lap.

Norma: Hec, is that a proper name?
Hec: Well, it's a lot more proper than Hector.

Norma: Do you think my son and I are in any real danger?
Hec: I don't know and I consider that danger.

Hec (about Stamp): The truth is, I think he's beginnin' to like me, and it's killin' him.

Hec (to Norma): You can't choose what's gonna happen. You can only choose what you want now.

Norma (to Hec): Takin' care of nobody but yourself is easy.
