Cullen uses a Griswald revolver as his weapon of choice. The Griswald is one of the rarest guns. Only 100,000 were produced and then the warehouse blew up in an explosion. It is claimed to be the Magnum of the 1880s.

For the first time, AMC uses another show as a lead-in for viewers. The Walking Dead aired immediately before Hell on Wheels from November 6, 2011 to November 27, 2011 (4 episodes). This lead to significant viewership gains for Hell on Wheels. The Walking Dead then went on hiatus until the new year.
The production crew could not find a period locomotive that would fit the needs for the show. They decided to build a train out of foam and wood. The wheels and undercarriage were hand-made by iron workers that look very much like a period locomotive. They added smoke boxes and a dry ice generator to complete the overall look of a working train.
