Episode Summary

The five remaining contestants learn they are no longer competing as teams, but as individuals who must work together (and against one another) to complete an entire dinner service. The theme of the dinner is "tableside service", with both the appetizers and dessert prepared tableside. To further complicate matters, there is a power failure, and the filet mignon mysteriously disappears.

  • Jimmy breaks out.

This was interesting because Jimmy broke out from being the butt of the joke, to really doing an excellent performance that Chef Ramsay had to compliment. Later in the dinner service, Jimmy was apparently the first person to ever say "no" to Chef Gordon Ramsay, which seemed to cause time to slow for a moment, but just when you thought the world was over, things went on as usual.

In the competition, I liked the idea that the three people who had actually done the flambe before screwed it up, while the two who had never done it before got it right. I think it comes down to Michael, Ralph and Jessica figured they didn't need to listen to instruction from the Chef, because they already knew.

In the end Jimmy got the boot and it really seemed Ramsay was sad to see him go.

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (9)

    • There is a possible case of sabotage in this evening's dinner service. Jessica's filet, which she saw Scott put in a line refrigerator, was not there during the dinner service, and she was forced to tell Chef Ramsay that she didn't have enough for the tickets ordered. Eventually Michael brought some up from a refrigerator in back where he knew there were some. Jessica says she doesn't believe that he did it for certain, but she thinks his drive to win might be strong enough to make him possibly consider using questionable tactics.

    • The Black Team: Elsie, Jimmy, Michael, Ralph, and Jessica

    • As Elsie starts doing her tableside Flambees, the first try does not appear to get a flame. This is just because Elsie does not have her pan on the fire as she has for the next tries that are successful among customers.

    • When Elsie is serving flambees, she serves the the ladies last at several tables, despite what Jean Philippe told her

    • Misc: It is the first time Chef Ramsay does not appear to be completely disgusted at the parting contestant.

    • Reward Challenge: Ramsay demonstrated how to make tableside fruit flambee. Based on Ramsay's opinion of presentation and taste, Jimmy and Elsie placed 1st and 2nd respectively. Jimmy received a helicopter trip over L.A. and was allowed to bring someone along; he chose Michael. The losers had to clean the front of the house at Hell's Kitchen.

    • Dinner Service: Ramsay eliminated the team concept and assigned the remaining five contestants to a single kitchen team, wearing black, where each contestant was now going to compete as an individual.

    • Dinner Service: Jimmy nominated Elsie to prepare tableside caesar salad and fruit flambee during the next service. The sous chefs Scott and Maryanne were given the night off, leaving only Jimmy, Jessica, Ralph and Michael in the kitchen. During the service, Ramsay requested Ralph work alongside him at the hotplate. Based on performance in the kitchen, Ramsay selected Ralph as the day's best.

    • Best of the Worst: Ralph

Nominees for Elimination: Although Elsie had asked Ralph to send her home, Ralph decided to nominate Jessica and Jimmy. Based on an in-kitchen confrontation during the service period.

      Eliminated: Jimmy

  • QUOTES (7)

    • Elsie: Nominate me.
      Ralph: Why?
Elsie: Because I'm tired. I'm tired, seriously. I wouldn't be insulted. Seriously, please. (in an interview segment) It's so exhausting, it's just like let's just get this over with. As things progress, things are gonna get more and more hectic, you know. I'm not as quick as they are.

    • Chef Ramsay: We can work in the dark.
      Contestants: Yes, Chef!
Chef Ramsay: Just eat plenty of carrots. Let's go!

    • Chef Ramsay: (to Jean Philippe after the lights go out) Okay, light's gone out, yes, tough ****, yes? Candles on the table, nice and romantic, and all those women out there won't be able to see their double chins.

    • Lady Patron: (critiquing Elsie's table side service) I think that's the first time she's ever made a salad.

    • Chef Ramsay: (referring to an added table side service) Jimmy, you won the challenge yesterday. You were the best at table side. So you are going to choose one of your colleagues to go out into the dining room- right now!
      Jimmy: (muttering) Jesus.
Chef Ramsay: Sorry, who was that? Jesus? No.
Ralph: He didn't make it to the final five.

    • Chef Ramsay: (on why he eliminated Jimmy) This is when we really find out who can handle the heat, and who can't. Clearly tonight, Jimmy couldn't.

    • Chef Ramsay: Jimmy, I'm proud of you.
