Episode Summary

Sin came looking for Hercules in the guise of Serena. She said she needed Hercules' help to recapture Xerxos, a murderer who had escaped from her world of evil souls. In truth "Serena" was in league with Xerxos. She poisoned Hercules in hopes he would take a life in anger, which would condemn his soul to her domain. But Iolaus was able to keep Hercules from killing Xerxos. The murderer found his sister, the criminal Arciana, and encouraged her to reform before it was too late. Then he and "Serena" returned to their realm.moreless

  • The final season begins with Hercules and Iolaus on the trail of a literally demonic killer. But an evil being that takes the appearance of Herc's beloved Serena attempts to lure him into a life of anger and war. Not a bad ep, but not outstanding...moreless

The sixth, final season of the series gets underway with this episode that is fair to watch once, but not one on my list of top episode to re-watch.
I think at this stage, the series had the feel about it that it was in its final days.

The devil make-up of Xerxos, the villain of the episode is good, and nothing less than we've come to expect from the series.

It's also interesting to see Sam Sorbo (nee Jenkins) in the form of Serena, but actually as something far more evil, as she tries to tempt Hercules into life on the dark side.

The highlight of the episode is definitely the climatic fight between Xerxos and Hercules, who himself is becoming demonic. It is really well staged and quite breathtaking.

Nothing much more to say about this episode really. It's one of those that is okay for a first viewing, but doesn't really reach out and grab you as anything special.moreless

    ADD TRIVIA
    • Watch Kevin Sorbo's face when Serena says, "Not yet, but I take awhile". This double entendre has him fighting to keep from laughing, instead of appearing angry, as he's supposed to. Edit
    • Nitpick Iolaus seems to recognize Serena, in spite of the fact that Hercules changed history and never married Serena. Even Aphrodite didn't know who she was, though she did have a feeling of deja vu when she saw her in the episode "My Best Girl's Wedding". Edit
    • This is the only time in the series that Kevin Sorbo wears prosthetic makeup. Edit
  • Notes

    ADD NOTES
    • Due to an editing error, Michael Hurst is not credited for this episode. We get the Iolaus-less version of the opening credits, with the giant falling, although there is no sound effect, where Hurst's credit should have been. Edit
    • Arciana was supposed to be Callisto's sister in this episode. Callisto was going to play the role of the Xerxos character, but Hudson Leick wasn't able to appear, and it would have been difficult to explain her presence anyways in light of Callisto's "redemption" in the Xena: Warrior Princess episode "Fallen Angel." Edit
    • Disclaimer: Xerxos' goose was cooked during the production of this motion picture. Edit

    ADD QUOTES
    • Grave Tender: (referring to the parents of Xerxos and Arciana) Shame what happened to her folks. Xerxos: What happened to them? Grave Tender: They gave birth to a monster. Xerxos: Tell me, grave tender, do you think a monster can grow a conscience? Edit
    • Serena lookalike: (when Hercules refuses her help) You know, pride has always been my favorite sin. Let's just hope yours doesn't get anymore innocent people killed. Edit
    • Hercules: Maybe, they're after the Sword of Hera. Iolaus: Okay, that's a new one. Hercules: Not really, it's been around a long time. Disciples move it from temple to temple to keep it hidden. Closest one is in Mycenaea. Iolaus: And let me guess, 'He who possesseth the Sword shall pierce his enemies unto the quick, yea, and smite them into the blood bespattered earth of their forefathers.' Hercules: And I thought you didn't like theatre! Edit
