Typhoon is the brother of Typhon, Echidna's husband, who was featured in "Cast a Giant Shadow" and "Monster Child in the Promised Land".
Goof: When Hercules attempts to climb down the beanstalk, you can tell he is just lying down on the 'cloudy' floor.
Autolycus: (Witnessing a fight between Leanna and Typhoon) Women, sheesh! Typhoon: What would you know, thief! Autolycus: Oh, actually, where I come from I'm considered something of a ladies man. You see, wooing women is an art. It must be approached with masterful skill and sensitivity. She must be engaged and stimulated, she must be cultivated like the little flower she is. She must be taken for all she's worth... uh, romanced.
Hercules: The Harpies! They're gone! Autolycus: Don't worry, they'll come back. They always do.
Autolycus: Well, it's been fun... (adding in an undertone) ...as far as near death experiences go.
Autolycus: (To Typhoon) I hate to break it to you, big guy. You've got Harpies.
Both Hercules and Xena ("The Furies") feature Three Stooges tributes in their 1997-1998 season openers.
Disclaimer: No permanent cases of Harpies were reported during the production of this motion picture picture.
This episode was filmed in May of 1997.
Typhoon: (As he and Hercules fight a giant serpent) To the moon, Herc! This is a paraphrase of the famous line from The Honeymooners starring Jackie Gleason.
Hercules: What we have here is a failure to communicate. This is a quote from the movie Cool Hand Luke.
Character Movements: Fi, Fie, and Fofum do a Three Stooges routine. And when one of them chases Leanna while a horn is honking it's a tribute to Harpo Marx.
Autolycus' Trap: The trap which Autolycus attempts to circumvent by replacing the pouch of beans with another the same weight is a tribute to a similar scene in the Indiana Jones movie Raiders of the Lost Ark. They also reuse the "water disturbed by giant footsteps" gag from Jurassic Park.
Greek Mythology: Harpies In mythology harpies were hybrid monsters with the torso and head of a woman and the bottom half and wings of a vulture. They were assigned the job of tormenting King Phineas by fouling his food so that he could never get a bite to eat that wasn't absolutely vile. He was saved eventually by the intervention of Jason and the Argonauts.
Harpies These monster's appearance and their like of playful destruction are very similar to the creatures from the 1984 movie Gremlins.
Fairy Tales: The story of a giant living in the castle in the clouds (reachable only by a giant beanstalk) with a hostage and treasure is taken from the fairy tale of "Jack and the Beanstalk". It also incorporates the story of "The Goose That Laid the Golden Eggs". Finally, the relationshp between Typhoon and Leanna mirrors the story of "Beauty and the Beast".
