My Best Girl's Wedding
AIRED:

Iolaus 2 was shocked to learn that Nautica, his mermaid love, had been given legs and was about to marry Lysaka. Hercules went to see Triton to get to the heart of the matter, and found his former wife, Serena. They discovered Lysaka had stolen Triton's trident, the source of his power, and Nautica was marrying Lysaka to get it back. Hercules got the Cabiri to fashion a new trident, then left Serena to return to Iolaus 2. When Aphrodite offered to make Iolaus 2 a merman so he could be with Nautica, he agreed and said good-bye to Hercules forever.

    This review contains spoilers.

I find this a pretty good episode, better than the previous couple, although it does have a few silly moments that work against it.

It starts off with Hercules and Iolaus II fishing, which turns out to be quite a good metaphor, as in this episode they both get second chances with 'the one(s) that got away'.

Iolaus is upset and dismayed to find that his beloved Nautica (now with legs again) is preparing to marry a local goon called Lysocka.

Nautica was only introduced two episodes previously, in the (surprisingly enjoyable) 'Love on the Rocks'. At first, I thought it was too early to bring her back, but as it turned out, they had their reasons...

Anyway, with Aphrodite's help, Iolaus gets in to see her, and it turns out that she is being blackmailed into the wedding after Lysocka a stole her father Triton's trident.

I really like Aphrodite in this episode. In her first couple of appearances in the series, I found her slightly grating, but by this stage, they have toned her annoying 'beach lingo' down and rounded her out into a likable character.

On board Lysocka 's ship, Iolaus II uses a number of disguises to get to Nautica. A couple of these are fair, and a few of them are just plain silly, and mark the episode down a couple of notches.

Hercules, meanwhile, has run into Serena (played by wife Sam Sorbo, nee Jenkins), from the third season's Golden Hind trilogy.

The flashback sequences to the third season's 'The End of the Beginning', where a different actress temporarily took over the role of Serena, are here re-filmed as to feature Sam Sorbo instead.

Being from a different time-line, Serena doesn't recognise Hercules, but that doesn't stop him longing for what might have been.

The end of the episode has a very unexpected outcome. Aphrodite turns Iolaus II into a merman so he can live under the sea and marry Nautica! I found this a very unexpected and surprising (and rather surreal) conclusion. Presumably, the producers and writers had felt that over his few episodes on the series, Iolaus II had run his course. At least they wrote him out with a happy ending, albeit a quite strange one.

All-in-all, although there are some silly moments that let it down slightly, this is a good late season episode.moreless
