I was expecting this to be an average, filler episode, but to my surprise, I enjoyed it.
Blind Ruun is played well by Dean O'Gorman, who played young Iolaus a few episodes previously in 'Regrets, I've Had A Few'.
It is the first time Hercules has encountered Amazons since the first TV movie, 'Hercules and the Amazon Woman'. It also confirms that there are breakaway bands of Amazon, explaining the difference in conduct and belief between the Amazons in 'Hercules and the Amazon Women' and those occasionally seen in 'Xena: Warrior Princess'.
It also marks the first appearance of Ephiny in the series who, with her centaur son Xenan, appear occasionally in 'Xena: Warrior Princess'.
[spoiler] Maybe it was me, but I thought there was a bit of a red herring in the story, as I expected the blonde Amazon who gets killed in the raid to turn out to be Ruun's sister, when it instead turns out to be the brunette one. [End of spoiler]
It does seem a bit convenient that Hercules and Ruun arrive just in time for a big Amazon raid, but it was forgivable, and the story unfolded to be an enjoyable one, with an exciting duel at the climax.moreless
Episode Summary

Ruun's parents were killed by renegade Amazons, who blinded the boy during their attack. Years later, Hercules freed Ruun from slavery and the two searched for Ruun's sister, Siri. When they found her, they discovered she had grown up to become a confident, battle-savvy Amazon warrior. The Amazon Mayhem had told Siri she was abandoned by her parents, and Hercules forced her to question this story. During a Fire Stakes ceremony in which Mayhem and Siri battled Hercules, Siri discovered the truth: Mayhem had betrayed her. The evil Amazon fell to her death and the siblings were reunited.moreless

Dean O'Gorman who portrayed Ruun in this episode has been in several episodes of both Hercules and Xena. His most frequent role is as young Iolaus both in Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and in the short-lived Young Hercules, but he also appeared as Hercules' cousin Iloran in the first season episode "The Gauntlet". He also portrayed the myth-making storyteller Homer in the first season Xena episode "Athens City Academy of the Performing Bards" and Wiglaf, the nephew of the Viking warrior Beowulf in the sixth season episode "Return of the Valkyrie".

Although Amazon Ephiny had appeared in several episodes of Xena: Warrior Princess, this is her first appearance in Hercules. Actress Danielle Cormack had been featured in an earlier episode, however, playing the French woman Marie in the third season's clip show "Les Contemptibles".

Danielle Cormack, who had to fight in an Amazon mask like those worn by Mayhem's tribe on several Xena episodes, said that they were almost impossible to see through properly, and she always did a fight scene in one praying no one would get hurt!
