AIRED:
As Alcmene's health failed, Hercules recalled the time years ago when the Parthans invaded Caylan territory. Young Hercules, Jason and Iolaus joined King Eteocles and fought bravely to repel the invaders, but the King was killed. Many more died before Hercules and Jason were able to make an offer of peace, asking King Stavros to share the disputed land with the Caylans. Stavros was impressed by their bravery and agreed ending the conflict. Back in the present , Alcmene passed away and was buried by Hercules and his friends. Suddenly his father, Zeus, confronted an angry Hercules.moreless

  • When Hercules rushes to see his mother Alcmene, whose health is failing fast, they reminisce about how Herc, as a teenager, left with Iolaus and Jason to go to war for the first time. A well written and performed episode...moreless

    This review contains spoilers.

In this episode, Hercules and Iolaus rush to see Alcmene, whose health has suddenly taken a turn for the worse, leading to yet another Young Hercules story (how many would you think they could do in one season?!) about how Herc, Iolaus and Jason left for their first taster of war.

By this stage, I have come to really like the young Herc-Iolaus-Jason line-up. Ian Bohen in particular does well as the young Herc, making it very believable that he will grow up into the Kevin Sorbo version.

The war scenes themselves are well shot, with explosions and debris flying everywhere. And there are a few gory moments, such as when a young soldier that Herc has befriended gets his arm severed.

I was sad to see Alcmene pass away at the end of the episode. Of the various actresses to play the character over the course of the movies and series, Liddy Holloway is by far the best in my opinion. Not only because she was the one to serve longest in the role, but for the grace and elegance she gave to it.

The episode is also notable for the return of Hercules' father Zeus, now played by Roy Dotrice. A staple of the original five TV movies, where he was played by Anthony Quinn, we had, in fact, seen Zeus in a one-off appearance in the third season episode 'Judgment Day', where he was played by Peter Vere-Jones. But even so, the return of Zeus at the end of this story does indeed seem grand.moreless
