Fleeing from Ares' soldiers, Nemesis burst into Hercules' campsite and proclaimed him the father of her six month-old son, Evander. Then she slipped away, leaving Hercules and Iolaus with the child, who soon demonstrated god-like powers. When they found her again, Nemesis revealed that the child was the son of Ares. The goddess Discord was consumed by jealousy and tried to make off with the baby, but Evander dispatched her over a tower wall. The powerful infant returned himself to the arms of his mother, and after a vicious battle with Hercules, Ares gave up his struggle for the baby.moreless

    "Great"
From the title of this episode, I expected it to be an all-out comedy episode. Instead, it is a mixture of comedy-drama, as was the case with many second season episodes, and is none the worse for it.

The story introduces Nemesis mark three, this time played by Kimberly Joseph. Of the three versions of the character seen in the series, I think I prefer the second (Theresa Hill) most of all, but this one isn't bad.

The episode also marks the first appearance in the series of Discord, having been first seen a couple of week's earlier in 'Xena: Warrior Princess'' 'The Deliver'.

The writers must have had babies on their minds at this point, as the previous 'Xena' episode 'Gabrielle's Hope' also revolved around a newborn.

It was actually Kevin Sorbo who suggested the idea of this episode to the producers, and he is credited as 'Story by' in the episode.

I really like the scenes of Hercules and Iolaus fishing by the river. It is one of the episodes that showcases their great rapport, and this is added to even more by the great scenery.

Herc and Iolaus also have some good scenes with the baby even if you can tell that the baby is a dummy half of the time!
Iolaus' laugh when Hercules gets sprayed in the 'nappy accident' seems to be real maybe Michael Hurst really did find Sorbo getting sprayed in the face amusing.

One thing I did notice in the climatic fight, there are several shots that were very clearly not Kevin Smith. Although the double work in the series is usually quite good, this is one of the few times that it really stuck out like a sore thumb.

    Overall, an enjoyable episode.moreless

    • Discord complains that she can't get the job of delivering "Divine Retribution" after Nemesis screwed things up. But in the fourth season Xena episode "Takes One to Know One" (a year and a half later than this episode) she got the job.

    • Goof: During the fight scene between Hercules and Ares, watch Ares' earring. In the middle of the battle, the earring flies off, but a few moments when Ares talks to Hercules, it is back in place.

  • QUOTES (8)

    ADD QUOTES
    • Hercules: (spotting his ex-girlfriend) Nemesis?! Iolaus: Uh oh. Hercules: What? Iolaus: Nemesis.

    • Iolaus: (coming back with milk for Evander) Who says cows give milk?! No way. You have to take it! Hercules: You're a wreck. Iolaus: Yeah? You should see the cow!

    • Nemesis: The Gods laugh and they play, but I don't know one who feels real joy. They have more than enough passion, but do you know one who really loves?

    • Ares: And don't you dare deviate from my plan. Discord: Telling a deviant not to deviate, that's not fair!

    • Ares: (when Hercules vows to see Evander grow up to be good) Good?! What good is a good man? He has a shot at greatness!

    • Iolaus: (as he and Nemesis both hang over a cliff) Get Nemesis first! I'll take my chances!
Hercules: I'd say your chances are close to zero.
Iolaus: Yeah? Well, that's better than nothing.

    • Meniskos: It never fails. Ares hand picks a general, a general with a record scratched in blood- a superb tactician, a military genius! But as soon as he feels the hand of Ares, as soon as he is called into Ares' personal service, he becomes a boob! It has happened to others, and now it has happened to me! I wish I were back in the field. How I would welcome an afternoon of pillaging. This is so degrading! Ares: (coming up behind him) Unhappy with your commission, Meniskos?!

    • Ares: How did you get rid of the previous tenants? Discord: They all kind of went mad and slaughtered each other. Ares: You and your pranks.
